"Thank you for understanding my hesitancy around speaking over video." Aruan propped her feet up on Euaen's desk as she held the phone headset to her ear.

"I... Am also..." Mr. Sanders couldn't find the right words.

"I look freaky." She laughed. "When I go on my Union TV binges, I always feel sick the first time I look in a mirror afterwards. I'm not offended that you find me hard to look at."

"So... All of us are completely enamored with you. If we could just hire you on, we would do that even if we had nothing for you to do." He was trying to sounds playful or cheerful. But he was obviously uncertain. "But... We're not sure what business we could have with your planet."

"So, I don't want to trauma dump..." She laughed. "The reason I'm still here is because we're not Union. Unless we commit a war crime, the Union cannot do anything to us. I know that you are all upstanding individuals who wouldn't break labor laws..." She paused. "But you would just be held to the basic Union standards. We have an entire underclass who would kill for the standard minimum wage."

"Worker exploitation?!" He gasped.

She nodded even though he couldn't see her. "Legal worker exploitation. I know from my TV binges how bare bones the minimums are. What do you have to pay your workers on your planet?" She knew the answer. "Not only would the pay be virtually nothing... You would have entire slums getting into fist fights to get a job at your factory. And do you think anyone would let that job go?" She laughed. "My people are raised to be cogs in machines. Being a bad little cog is being a bad person."

"I'm being recorded." He sighed. "Well, we're being recorded."

She laughed. "Mr. Sanders, I would not say a single thing that I don't stand behind. This is all true. We don't have the most accessible natural resources. Those would take time and money to get up to scale. But the workforce?"

He hummed a bit. "The original proposal was that we would simply buy products from the factory you work at. Yes, of course, Mr. Bass would be overjoyed at the prospect of..." He paused. "... Lifting hardworking people out of poverty." He took a breath. "How about I come and inspect the factory."

"Need to make sure that we aren't unscrupulous copper merchants." She nodded.

"Hey now!" He laughed. "I let Edgar Allen Poe slide, but now you're throwing some real history at me. You know your stuff, kid."

"Of course, of course." She imagined herself smiling. "Because of some political stuff, I likely won't be able to meet you at the airport. I can get my boss to arrange everything. Thank you so much for considering doing business with us."

"No, no, thank you Miss Heath!"

She hung up the phone. She knew what she was doing.
