Marina didn't have a human name until she met Simon. Her name was a series of echolocation clicks that didn't even sound right on land. But Simon was so silly. When he was being romantic, he would make silly noises that almost sounded like her name. 

They always met at the shore. She could go up to the lighthouse alone, but he was so romantic and always kept her steady as she tried to get used to having legs.

But she wasn't happy for their date. She was on the edge of breaking down. 

"Marina...!" Simon cried out as he saw her miserable state. 

Marina looked up at him. "They found out." She looked towards the sea. "They found out about us."

Simon was confused. He listened to everything Marina said and he listened intently. He remembered every word she said as if it was the most important thing possible. But it was pulling teeth to get her to say anything about mermaid society.

He sat down next to her and caressed her face. "I would forsake the land and every single thing on it to be by your side."

"No..." Marina closed her eyes. She placed her hand on Simon's neck. "I have but one final gift to give you."

Before Simon could open his mouth to question her, a shock of electricity raced through his body. Marina caught him in time before he fell back and hit his head on the rocks.

As he started to come back to life, Marina held him tightly. "You are a witch, Simon. You had it hidden from you... But they could taste the water around me. Witches are the greatest enemy to mermaids. One's magic destroys the other's." She pulled him closer. "I destroyed the curse. You will never see me again... But you will live for hundreds and hundreds of years... You could have endless riches..." She pulled away. "But even with your curse... I couldn't be by your side forever. You make me human. And human is such a beautiful and wonderful thing..." She slowly stood, holding out her hand to help him stand with her. 

"Marina..." Simon was dumbfounded as he stood.

She clasped his hands in hers. "Your magic will come back to you. You'll learn everything you can do."

"Is... Is this really over?" Simon whispered. 

Marina closed her eyes. "Simon... There will be many more women who will fall in love with you. And you'll likely lose every single one to the stains of time. I'm happy to be your first true love... But that's what happens when you are immortal." She opened her eyes. "We're linked, Simon."

He looked down at their glowing hands. "I'll never see your face, but I'll always know your heart, and you will always know mine."

Her breath hitched. "As punishment, they are moving me to a different society in a different sea. But I will always love you..." She pulled away. "And through our magic, I can never forget you."
