 Technically, the name is Makaron Tanaka / Tanaka Makaron. But you see, Macaron isn't his legal name. He gets called that because of how much he loves macarons.

Macaron is an eighteen year old man who hates people to the point that he always wears a gas mask.

"Hey, Lis," Jack called out. "Why is this door padlocked?"

Lisa popped out from their bedroom. Jack had been over plenty of times. But he was a very polite man. He never poked around her house until she invited him to move in. She told him he could have some storage space in a closet in a hallway that he had never had a reason to go down before. 

"Oh, that thing!" Lisa laughed. "There's a hole in the floor."

Jack was confused. "A... Hole?" He tried to do the math in his head. "Aren't we above your kitchen?"

Lisa laughed. "Yeah! It's patched. The door is locked because it's patched - not fixed. Put your weight on it, you'll be crashing into the kitchen."

Jack was confused. 

"Yeah." Lisa shrugged. "I'm not planning on selling this place, so what's the point of fixing it up?"

"I mean..." Jack looked back at the lock. "But why is it padlocked from the outside instead of just being a locked door?"

Lisa laughed. "Decoration, you know. Sending a message that you don't go in that room!"

Jack looked back at Lisa. "What would happen if I went in there but I stepped on the wooden framing instead of on the kitchen ceiling's drywall?"

Something flickered across Lisa's face that he couldn't read. Was she upset with him? Was she scared? 

"We could make up stories all night!" She laughed. She looked and sounded so genuine. "But I lost the key a long time ago. It would take an angle grinder to get in there!"

Lisa was smart. She wasn't just smart - she was inventive and meticulous. Even if he could buy that she misplaced a key, he couldn't buy that she couldn't pick a lock if she wanted to. 

It had to be something else, Jack reasoned to himself. If it was just a hole in the floor, surely she would ask him to look at it. His entire childhood was hanging around his father's construction crew! 

"You know, it's damp in the kitchen and now I know why." Jack hid his unease perfectly with a wry smile. "You're keeping a shark in there!"

Lisa laughed and pantomimed as if she were a shark chomping at Jack. 

Jack walked to Lisa and put his arm around her. "Let me know if there are any other surprises. Like maybe a tiger in the basement?"

"You know I don't have a basement!" Lisa giggled as she led him away. "Tigers are strictly cellar cats!"

Jack trusted Lisa. He loved her. He had never doubted her or her intentions. 

He wasn't going to let himself start now. There was just going to be a shark in the room. He couldn't make himself believe it was a hole in the floor... pushing himself to accept the impossible was less painful to accept something so obviously mundane. 

He wanted to get an angle grinder like she suggested. It was an old looking lock - those had to be easy to pick...
