mitu-web / 屑屋みつ's UTAUs - An Investigation
After my last investigation, I needed a break from boys that sounded like girls. I was in luck, because the next collective on my to-do list is packed with women!
This collective is run by Kuzuya Mitu. This is an actual collective with multiple voice providers, one main designer, and one main artist. My understanding is that "U-to" provides all of the OTO files, but I also don't exactly know who that is.
Luckily for me, this is a collective with seven UTAUs. Only one has more than one bank (or so I thought), and I can't use one of her banks due to not speaking Korean. I only have nine banks to review (or so I thought), and I'm happy about that. Let's get to it!
Who is 亡音霊 / Rei Nakine?

Nakine Rei is non-binary and wishes that they had feet. Rei's name includes "death" and "soul", as Rei is a ghost that was hit by a train. Man, I started out with an UTAU with a pretty heavy backstory! Her voice provider is Mitu.
Rei has four banks: a three pitch CVVC, an eight pitch CVVC, a three pitch VCV, and a one pitch Korean bank. I'm unable to use Korean as I don't understand it, so I can only look over Rei's first three banks.
I adore the three pitch CVVC, but I'm not a fan of the eight pitch CVVC. The VCV is great, but I'm just not a fan of power scales. These banks are power scales. If you love power scales and CVVC, this UTAU is one you need to check out.
Who is アル音パカ子 / Pakako Arune?

Her name is Al-sound-paca-kid. She's based on alpacas! Pakako only has one bank, a three pitch CVVC. She shares the same voice provider (Mitu) with Rei. And I absolutely adore this UTAU.
I dislike the fact that the design is way too racy for the stated age, and it's super uncool that she likes mean people! But, the design and the voice are just so cute to me.
Who is 鳩羽音グレオ / Gureo Hatobane?

The filename of the ZIP for Gureo states that this uses a new version of the CVVC list. It indeed is, as it is set up so that each consonant has its own line, and that consonant doesn't show up anywhere else in the files.
It makes so much sense to order the bank in that way, but I could never be comfy with more than five mora while recording VCV! Seven mora just seems really hard. Though, there only being 38 files including the fancy end breaths and sustained vowels makes up for that.
Gureo has a separate voice provider from the previous two UTAUs. Her voice provider is 月慈 / Tsukiji. Gureo is a model who loves black cats and hates beans. Her voicebank is a three pitch CVVC and . . . I was shocked when I heard it. I felt like the voice sounded nothing like the design.
Who is 畳寝 アマタ / Amata Tatamine?

Amata is the first of two guys on mitu-web. His voice provider is Mitu herself. I was super happy to learn that he was a two pitch VCV! Apparently, there is food stuck on his head, and not a cute bun.
His voice is rather deep, but still nice.
Who is 時兎イヤ / Tokito Iya?

Iya's voice provider is Tsukiji. It's likely that Iya was based on Alice in Wonderland as she loves tea ceremonies and has bunny ears.
Iya has three voicebanks, though the only names given are "no suffix", "2", and "3". I literally had no idea she had more than one bank, as there was only one download link. All three are three pitch CVVC banks. The banks are very varied in tone, but still feel like the same character.
Who is ヒゲヨシ / Higeyoshi?

I don't know, and I don't get it. I had to lower the UST by 24 semitones to use all of the pitches! I'm not sure what the design is supposed to be, and apparently Higeyoshi only allows women to "master" him. I guess guys will just have to have wonky covers with tons of volume spikes. (Haha, audio processing jokes.) His voice provider is not Tsukiji nor Mitu. Instead it is 正成 / Masashige.
He has a human design, of course, but only the super manly Kirby came with his voicebank. It's a trip to hear an UTAU this low, especially with such a silly design.
Who is 琴乃ミマ / Mima Kotono?

From the first moment I saw Mima's design, I knew I was going to love the UTAU. She's shy and she's friends with ghosts. That's pretty cool! Her voice provider is listed as Mitu in the Character file, but not on the website.
In addition to her one pitch VCV, she comes packaged with an extra UTAU named 黒い手 / Black Hand. I thought Black Hand would be some kind of yelling joke bank, but it's actually a really good one pitch CV bank. Her VCV is exactly the kind of bank I go crazy over. It's a soft, mature, womanly voice. This UTAU feels like it was custom made for me to adore, as silly as it sounds. (I even like the name! Mima is so cute!)
How can I download these banks?
Start by going to this page. When you hover over "UTAU音源の利用規約" a drop down pops up with all of the UTAU names. Click one of the names, and you will be taken to that UTAU's profile along with a BowlRoll link to download the UTAU from.
These are nice, high quality UTAUs with great designs. Mima even inspired me to contact Mitu to tell her how awesome Mima is!
I really do hope that Western users fall in love with these banks and show them off. With all of the love put into these banks, I know great things could be made with them 😄
Update: After writing this article, I made contact with Mitsu herself about recording an English bank for Mima. We are working together to record English versions of her UTAUs. Be on the look-out!
