Okay so, I'm breaking the rules for a good reason. My computer is really running low on space, and some of the Wiki Wednesday UTAUs take up like a gigabyte of space. Well, I need to write about those ASAP! But, I need to space them out so that not all the cool stuff happens at once! There are three really cool ones to write about, and maybe put two in between each... who even knows anymore!
Wiki Wednesday #128 - گلنار عطار / Golnar Attar
Even though she's been on my computer for a long time, I had never seen her picture until I started writing for this article.
I love her. I don't know what she sounds like yet, and I don't care. I love her. She is an adorable cutie pie! I got in a lot of trouble with my ex because I love lamp.
I love everything that I like and enjoy, because I'm just that kind of person. Why use a word like "like" if I can love it?!
It's at times like this that I wish there were more words for different kinds of love in English. I love UTAUs the way I love cats. Kitty-love? That's the name of a dating simulator where you turn into a cat at night. So maybe not that either.
Who is Golnar Attar?
Official Art from Bank |
I did way more research than I should have. Golnar is a Persian princess. First, Iran is Persia. But greater Iran includes countries like Afghanistan. However, Iran is still occasionally called Persia. The final Iranian dynasty was ended in 1979. That means that for her backstory to be correct, she had to have been born in 1964 if she was fifteen when she escaped. Though, she probably needed to escape before then, because she thought she was giving up being a princess and not, ya know, what happened.
I think her clothes place her during the Qajar dynasty era, though. That spanned between 1789 to 1925. But how would a woman in 1925 become an idol?! Well, she could be a jazz singer and a movie star.
Mind you, Golnar specifically likes traditional clothing and can choose to wear a period piece in the modern day.
Or, hear me out, Golnar is from a fictionalized Persian state that was never influenced by the West. Idols are more of an Asian concept (no one calls Madonna an idol). So, in this fictionalized Persia, Europe and Russia just kind of fell off the map and there is a royal family still kicking around in this version of Persia. Also, Golnar is well aware that she will be forced to rule the kingdom if she stays. This would mean that this version of Persia allows queen regnants, which was never a thing past the 1700s.
Oh, and also she plays video games. That kind of nips the whole 1930s jazz singer in the bud.
Golnar dislikes work and could never be an idol on her own. It's only due to her friend who she escaped with that she can be an idol. Her friend gives her courage. She has quite a bit of confidence issues on her own.
Her name translates to pomegranate flower, and her character item is pomegranates.
Her outfit is beautiful. The deep pinks and reds go beautifully with her sandalwood skin. The golden details on her dress are perfect. They give just enough contrast to give visual interest without clashing. She also has black rimmed glasses! So cool!
She has long, flowing black hair, only partially obscured by her light pink headscarf.
If you're reading this, Pokeloid Luna, this is basically a perfect design.
How are Golnar Attar's banks?
Golnar has four banks. VCV, Peri append, VCV 2, and tripitch CVVC. (Stan CVVC)
Golnar has a deep and mature voice. We stan chiquitas with deep voices in this house. (hi there!)
VCV 1 is a romaji encoded, two pitch bank that... doesn't have suffixes on the second pitch. Allow me to scoot-a-loo to setparam.
wait... why is C4 romaji encoded?! uh... This bank will be a pain to use. Especially because Moresampler made a dang mess with "y" samples.
The OTOs are the kind of bad where I would just need to delete them and start over, but it doesn't obscure the fact that this is a really good bank!
Next, we have Peri Append. This is meant to be more gentle.
The OTOs, again, are the kind I would blank out and redo entirely if I had time. But, despite that, this is such a nice and sweet voice!
VCV 2 is two mora vcv.
ouch |
It's one pitch and romaji encoded. OTOs still bad. "n お" is missing somehow? And the "r"s weren't American, but now they are?? I don't really mind, but that is just so strange that this goes against the typical progression of UTAU users and their experiences.
Finally, we have the tri-pitch CVVC. Guess who has no suffixes? And the OTOs are bad.
Ayayay. I should have fixed the overlap in SetParam while I had it open. The issue is that there's not nearly enough room for proper overlaps to blend nicely.
It's not a bad bank, but it has a lot of issues and will take a lot of work to get it where you want it. I still love her voice, even with these struggles! I wouldn't put so much work into getting a good sample if I didn't!
Where can I download Golnar Attar?
You can download her from her website. I sent Pokeloid Luna a message offering to work with her to make a Farsi or Arabic bank. I love almost everything about this lil chiquita except the OTOs, and I do hope that I'm able to work with Pokeloid Luna in the future.
