The Haunted Shoe, part one

I was sitting in my living room doing nothing in particular on my phone. It was a boring Friday morning, though being unemployed meant that it could be any day of the week.

When I heard the doorbell ring, I asked myself if I wanted to get it. Of course, leaving the couch...

I couldn't finish my thought as the ringing progressed to knocking. I guess they really knew I was hiding from the outside world!

I groaned as I stood and walked to the foyer. I threw the door open with my best 'don't speak to me before my coffee' face.

The mailman was unaffected and cheery. "Miss Sand?"

I nodded.

He held out a box. "Your great auntie will be missed very much, so she hopes that this will help ease your pain."

I craned my neck to try and see if he had any kind of logo on his uniform. "What company are you from? I didn't..." I paused. I didn't know if I had a great aunt, and I wasn't sure what a great aunt even was. I shook my head. "I think you have the wrong house."

He shook his head. "Melissa Michelle Sand. Daughter of Samuel Sand and Jenna Michaels-Sand." He paused before giving me a mischievous grin. "I'm not from any company. I just deliver very important packages, freelance."

"Sounds fake." I took the package. He got my name right and my parents' names right. If I let myself believe I really did have a great aunt, then I didn't need to be scared that he knew so much. He turned and skipped away. I stared until I closed the door and went back to the living room.

I dropped the box on the coffee table and lifted the lid.

One... Shoe? One singular shoe. I stared at it in confusion. Who would send someone one shoe? It looked like a completely normal, inexpensive shoe from somewhere like Walmart. I lifted up the shoe and sat it on the table before rummaging through the tissue paper that surrounded it. No letter, no note, just that one shoe with no explanation.

I texted my parents in our group chat. "Whose great aunt just died?"

"What's that?" My father had the same reaction as me.

I quickly googled and responded. "Dumb question, sorry. All of your parents were only children."

My mother texted a few emojis to show how confused she was.

"I got a box with my inheritance from a great aunt, but I think it's a prank."

My mother sent more shocked emojis and a gif.

"Yeah, you're right." I could imagine my father nodding as he texted. "Unless there's some mysterious illegitimate child we never knew about, you have no great aunt. What is it?"

"Maybe it's from a great aunt twice removed? Do you have any relatives with only one foot who may have just passed?"

How is Kamuki Kusari's bank?
