"Hello, good sirs!" Aruan was a little annoyed that Euaen arranged a video call. She would have preferred the men on the other side of the screen imagine her as a typical Union Member. Not... Her. "Now, I must stress, my accent is not due to lack of fluency." She paused and pointed at her mouth. "I was born with an anatomical issue that was remedied through surgery at a young age."

The men were all portly and wearing suits. "Yes, Miss..."

"Aruan Heath." She couldn't crinkle the corners of her eyes. She just had to wildly move her eyebrows to try and display any normal kind of emotion. "If you're doubtful of my history, you can look up the studies about me that were published."

"Oh, no, I trust you!" The largest man awkwardly laughed. "I wanted to make sure you know, this was never a racial thing! We simply have refused any deals without native level English speakers because we refuse to have a computer be the go-between. You ever heard that old Earth story?"

Aruan nodded. "Spent millions of dollars on a project, just for it to explode because those silly Americans accidentally used inches when the Europeans used centimeters? You need to be careful. Mr. Bass, I assure you..." She wanted to smile so badly! "Telling you that I could read Shakespeare from a young age is a cute but ineffective flex in this situation. I can send over my work on several scientific studies that I have assisted with."

Both the room the men were in and the room she was in fell silent. They were just staring at her, trying to understand. 

"Wait..." The slimmest man slowly stood up. "We were told that you had no education. You were never even admitted to a school."

"Oh, Mr. Sanders, yes." She nodded. "I had to drop out of daycare. Spent all of my time in the hospital until education was no longer compulsory." She tried to give a cute shake of her head. "But, this planet? Extremely... Nationalistic. They do not teach English. I'm likely the only person on this entire rock who can recite Edgar Allen Poe by heart."

She wanted to smile! "So, I can assure you, if you want a chance to utilize the resources of this lovely planet, I am your only option. Unless, of course, you trust translators to convert our Imperial measurements to your metric. The conversion factors are pretty hard to remember."

Mr. Bass just looked confused. "You... Understand our confusion. We... Actually were expecting this to be a joke. You know, you've almost got less of an accent than Ouura Luna."

"She was raised Madian. I was raised Union." She tried to do a cute thing with her eyes. "She prefers to speak Madian. I only speak English."

"Yes... If we send paperwork, could we be assured that you will be the one to handle it?" Mr. Sanders looked nervous as he asked. 

"Of course!" She so badly wanted to smile! "Would be silly for me not to!"
