My fiance left me. Told me it was because he met someone new. That he never cheated but he was close and he could never hurt me that way...

It was a lie. The jerk left me for a computer program that friend-zoned him. But the Reddit posts he was posting? Oh, of course he was going to break through her programming and make her his wife. 

I was done with technology. I was done with my chrome plated apartment. I didn't even break the lease. I just left. What were they going to do? I was still paying the rent. 

I opened the door. A flurry of dust kicked up just barely obscuring the old timey wooden room where the only metal was the bronze fittings. Great. My first day in my new house and it was either going to be spent cleaning or sneezing. Or both.

New wasn't the right word. It was my grandmother's house. She didn't die; she just picked up and moved to Florida with a boyfriend just old enough to sneak in to the senior living community. 

I stepped into the room and there was a creaking sound. I didn't feel the floor give way, though. I tested the spot and the hardwood was solid through the wood patterned linoleum. There was another creak coming from the closet.

I opened the door and screamed. I slammed the door and turned my back to it. 

It was a skeleton?! In my grandmother's closet?!

"Mary Lynne..." A creaking and chilling voice came from the closet. 

As afraid as I was, I was taken aback by that name just enough to run through my family tree. Nope. No one with that name. But this house had been in my family since it was built. 

I turned and steeled myself and opened the door. There was, in fact, a skeleton. Though it looked neatly prepared. It was neatly prepared! It was strung together as if it had come from a science lab. But the skeleton was wearing clothes and had large gems in the eye sockets. His jaw started to move. "You're committing tax fraud Mary Lynne..."

I took a step back. "I'm Rachel."

There was an awkward pause as the gems shifted around. "Uh..."

"Why are you?" I didn't bother to correct my question. He understood. 

"I was an accountant!" His voice was still creaking and hollow but he had emotion to it. 

"And you..." I rolled my eyes. "You were Aunt Deb's dad, weren't you?"

There was an awkward silence. 

"Well, I mean, technically..." 

Sometimes you need to be unhinged. I grabbed his hand and pressed my tongue against the bone. Or should I say "bone". I looked up to make eye contact. "You're made of resin. Not bone."

He was genuinely shocked. "There were many better ways to check that!"

I shrugged. "Want me to go drag you out in front of a window?"

"Yes." His voice was small. "I'd love that."
