Wiki Wednesday #4 - Chie Koizumi / 千恵小泉
Let me start by saying HOW?! How does this UTAU only have one video on YouTube? This bank is so adorable. Let me get out of the way that it is a one pitch CV bank. That has something to do with it, of course. I like the bank so much I commented on the voice provider's release video asking if she was considering VCV. (She is thinking about it, but she needs to fit making it around her college schedule.)
As always, I'm saving embedding the sample until later in the article. But boy howdy! Brace yourself for adorableness.
Who is Koizumi Chie?
Chie is an example of a bank that has literally no supplementary material. At all.
The only reason her name shows up was because I changed the name of the bank from "F4" to "Chie Koizumi" so that I wouldn't get it mixed up with anything else.
To find out anything about Chie, you need to visit her Wiki Dot page.

She has an entire backstory about a curse that tormented her family for years and the spirit that she's best friends with. Maybe someday she'll bring someone on to voice the spirit-bff. She also really likes pudding and hates corn. I love these silly little details.
Chie Koizumi was created by JJFeathers. JJFeathers mostly sings covers using her own voice and not UTAU. That's actually pretty unusual for UTAU users!
How is the bank?
Let me start with my obligatory shout out to the OTOs. Chie has uniform OTOs for a CV bank. I really, really haven't seen that before and I wonder how she came to doing it.
The issue with doing that is that it makes the voice awkwardly choppy.
For example, let's look at the わ sample.
With "wa", you want the green line to be on the beginning of the "w" sound so that it blends in seamlessly with the vowel before it. However, this "wa" has the green far away from the "w" so that there is silence. Silence before the green is fine. It will just crossfade with the sound before it. Silence after the green line and before the red means that UTAU will cut off the vowel in the preceding note, play that silence, then play what you want it to play.
An important note is that you do want silence between the green line and the red line for plosives like "t", "k", and "g". However, the more silence between the green and red line means more of the preceding vowel being cut off. It's a balancing act. Too much and it's stilted. Too little and it doesn't sound natural.
This is JJFeather's first UTAU. I'm not writing this out to put her down, just to educate people why certain things might not be the best idea. If you love how this method sounds, go for it! There's no right or wrong way to spend your time playing with little singing robots.
Regardless of that wall of text, I love this UTAU.
The bank is super duper cute and it has the perfect level of muffle for me. As much as I love banks that sound like they're coming from a tin can telephone, it is nice to actually have some definition to make it understandable!
How can I download Koizumi Chie?
The download link is on Chie's Wiki Dot page. Watch that page, because there's a good chance that Chie will get a new voicebank. And I will be hype 😃
Ahh!! 💕 I don't know how I haven't seen this before!! (I'm JJFeathers, Chie's voice provider!) Thank you for taking the time to write about her and promote my Utau! I love the little snippet of Leia that you used her VB for!! 💕 I'm actually working on a VCV update right now for Chie, and I also have updated her CV oto (though I don't remember if I updated her wikipage lol)
ReplyDeleteOnce again, thank you for writing about her! I'm really honored and happy!! 💖
