Is this even still A Spectrum of Apple Skins? I figure!
Sue Ann took a deep breath. "You know, no city university is going to take a boy from Appalachia. We done took the class divide and ripped it in twain. The nursing program was for people like us." She sighed and looked up at the ceiling. "And people like us are everywhere. Here in America, out in Westerica and Easterica… we just decided we ain't happy seeing us replaced by robots."
"They ain't going to accept him," Jeanette narrowed her eyes. "You brought me here saying my boy is doomed?"
"There is a way up for him!" Sue Ann smiled brightly as she shuffled some papers on her desk.
"Up North?" Jeanette leaned back. "Is there some hippie commune doing calculus up there?"
"No," Sue Ann let out a nervous laugh. "Mars. The Red Planet."
Jeanette leaned forward, digging her elbows into her knees. "You're saying because he's from here, he gotta leave Earth just to have a good life?"
"It's a long program," Sue Ann sighed. "He doesn't actually need to go. Now, let me tell you, with as low as the standards are, we don't teach much of anything past eighth grade. School is for babysitting and socializing."
"He has eight brothers and sisters!" Jennette groaned. "And who needs a dang twelve year old babysat?!"
"Yes," Sue Ann slowly nodded. "That's why he would be better off nearly anywhere else. And this program Mars is doing would actually learned him something."
"Really?" Jeanette rolled her eyes. "They're just going to take my baby away from me and that's good for him?"
"No, no," Sue Ann nervously laughed. "If you pull him out of school today and agree to it all, they'll send you a computer and a satellite dish. He will learn remote from the same teachers teaching up there. That's all it will be until the next launch window in six years. He'll be eighteen and it'll be his choice if he goes up there for university."
Jeanette slouched down and looked up at the ceiling. "You know, I got a phone voice. You probably think I'm always in the kitchen or cleaning the floors. My eldest daughter - sweetest soul - after her husband died at age seventeen, she came home. Demands to pay rent with no money. I have her be the mother of the house while I make money. Surveying don't pay much no more. I'm keeping the entire family afloat doing sales calls." She paused before saying in a perfect Hollywood accent, "I'm so sorry that your computer is broken. I can call in a technician to walk you through the process of troubleshooting. However, the price of repairs is less than the price of a new computer. I may be able to authorize a discount on last year's model."
Sue Ann blinked. She slowly lowered her chin. "How long were you in the city?"
"In my heart? Every day until I had to come back here." Jeanette sighed, still speaking without a hint of an accent. "I was glued to the television growing up. I was the unpopular one in every aspect of my life here. I started working on my accent as soon as I realized that I would never belong here at age seven." She rolled her eyes. "It's almost painful to pull off the accent I'm supposed to have. It's comical. But do you know what happens when I speak like this? Of course you do. You are crawling out of your skin at this very moment."
Sue Ann shifted her weight in her chair. "Yes. But, let's fill out the forms."
