Wiki Wednesday #190 - Akane no Oni / 茜の鬼
the story behind this character... Makes me feel uncomfortable. Honestly, it's just that the character has this goblin side of her that it could be seen as a metaphor for my disorder. But then it says that the character has my disorder. If the creator of this character has my disorder also, I think it's not harmful for them to make a character that resembles how they feel. But, bipolar is the new edgy disorder, like schizophrenia used to be. So that's why I just feel unsure on how I feel about this.
Also, for some reason, she is dead.
Who Is Akane no Oni?

"Supposedly" fictional Chia here.
"They made apes talk! They made apes talk!"
It was all you could hear in the cafeteria or in the hallways. Scientists had surgically modified gorillas to be able to speak English. Some people were even hoping that the gorillas could join the Union.
I was standing outside the office of a nature conservatory, waiting to be let in. As the freak with no name, I had been hand selected to test how suited gorillas were for service. A zookeeper let me in and we chatted while we waited for the caretaker to bring out Baobao. I asked if they had misspelled Baobab. Bao is an Asian dumpling, and Chinese names were often the same syllable repeated. Baobab was an African fruit. The zookeeper asked what Africa was. I asked if she could pretend I said nothing. She was relieved and moved on to commenting on the weather.
Gorillas have been extensively tested on in your time period. The big one was Koko. The keeper was either delusional or a scam artist. I knew going into this what the result would be.
The caretaker came into the room. She was smiling brightly as she took my hands. She addressed me as Ms. Nonamé and I accepted it. She led me to a small room separated by transparent acrylic slats. The openings were too small to fit a hand through. I sat down and felt chills run down my spine.
I was being stared down in the way that you can feel.
Gorillas aren't as tall as you'd think. She was barely taller than me, but she was wide and imposing. I could imagine her hands breaking me in half. Especially because she didn't want to be there. I didn't want to make her angry, so I nervously smiled. The caretaker gently shoved me and told my teeth are aggressive. I sucked my lips in and bit down to make extra sure that the gorilla didn't see my teeth.
There was a haunting and gutteral laugh. I looked up at Baobao's face. She thought this was funny.
I opened my mouth and asked what her name was.
"Eat paw pull baw eat."
I blinked. The caretaker explained that Baobao wanted grapes. Baobao repeated herself. The caretaker asked for the short name. Once Baobao responded with "gape", the caretaker pulled a few grapes from her pocket and pushed them through the slats.
I wanted out of the room, but I knew this was being recorded. I asked again what her name was. She demanded a banbanba. I sank back in my chair. The caretaker told Baobao in a cloying voice that fruit was later.
Baobao huffed. I looked up at the caretaker. She encouragingly nodded her head. I didn't know what she wanted me to do! I looked back to Baobao and asked what she liked to do. I got the one word response of "fun". I asked what fun was. She looked angry before responding in her garbled accent 'good short word long bad'.
The caretaker nervously explained that Baobao was encouraged to learn specific names and to not string together words to get her meaning across.
I slowly stood. The caretaker gasped as I slowly backed away until I was against the wall. I kept my eyes on Baobao as I inched sideways to the door. She was humored. As soon as my hand was touching the door frame, I ran back into the main office.
How Is Akane no Oni's bank?
She Has a one pitch vcv bank. There's missing samples? The otos are not done with the correct school of thought... The voice is nice, though! It's a bit deep and androgynous. Like a goblin would be.
Where Can I download Akane no Oni?
You can download her from her wiki page. There is a reference drawing in the bank that some might find inappropriate. Nothing illegal or nasty - but if you're on a family computer and your parents freak out about bodies with less clothes than normal, now you know.
