Forgotten Friday #227 - 常托莉 / Tori Chang

I'll be real with you: when I'm in a bad place, lists are my favorite thing. I made a Mandarin list, I've made a Cantonese list..

 But whatever list it is, it is so hard to find people to record it! I was really lucky with my Mandarin list in finding people to help, but even when they helped, I wished I could help give Tori her promised Chinese bank. We were promised a new bank in 2011, but it never came through. The voice provider, Kimchicake, seems to have been missing since the beginning of 2019.

Tori is a tsundere young woman from Singapore who likes bad puns. 

The icon in her bank looks nothing like the one on the wikia. However, there was a now unavailable file that included new art and character information. All of the old art seems to have been scrubbed from the Internet.

"You weren't one of Connie's kids." Tobias shrugged. "You were, in fact, what do you guys call it?"

"Legacy." Charlotte looked up at the sky as her eyes rolled so forcefully they almost hurt. "But you've been watching this entire time. You know what we were called."

Tobias waited for her to look back towards him. As she took another sip of coffee, he finally told her what she had scheduled the meeting to hear. "She can't read. She doesn't know what math is. She's been alone for so long, I don't even know if she speaks English anymore. She just makes animal noises at the animals in the pond. I am genuinely worried, but you know about the whole..."

"Not anymore!" Charlotte cut him off. "Nope, not having it, not doing it. Screw it."

"Wait." Tobias furrowed his brow. "Are you implying you're going to kidnap her?"

"You live there, Tobias!" Charlotte was too agitated to passive aggressively use his old name. "You can talk to her! You can teach her to read! You could teach her to cook! She has two years before she's introduced to the system that I'm trying to dismantle!"

Tobias was silent as Charlotte tried to compose herself. She cleared her throat. "How did it get this bad?"

"Electronics were allowed in Connie's house for a good while." He rubbed his temples as he continued. "As soon as I could get a tape recorder, I got all of the material I needed to get them to teach themselves to read. Once they could read, they could learn math from textbooks."

Charlotte rolled her eyes again. "But she put up some spell that makes electricity not work?" Charlotte paused. "What did you do before cassette tapes?"

"Charlotte, I'm old, but I'm not that old." Tobias laughed. "I've only been Connie's house elf since the seventies. I had always relied on tapes and the stronger readers helping the weaker ones. But, as you may have noticed, McKenzie is alone now."

"Can I kidnap her?" Charlotte finally felt like she found a solution. "Let her play edutainment games on a computer?"

"Char, no." Tobias watched as Charlotte's expression fall into one of absolute dejection. "Connie still has enough connections to take you down if you admit that you're the one taking her down. Once you have McKenzie out and at least one more of the old guard is forced to retire, you can try. But not now."

Charlotte lowered her chin and made direct eye contact with Tobias. He slowly nodded as he realized what she wanted to say.

"For you, Char." Tobias placed his hand on hers. "I will break a rule that I have been following for half a century... Because you are right: things do need to change."

Charlotte smiled, though she looked like she was about to cry. "Thank you, Sigurd. It's just one person... But every single action against the system gets us just a little bit closer to taking it down."

How is Tori Chang's bank?

Tori Chang has a one pitch, hiragana encoded CV bank. You can tell that whoever did the OTOs understood most of the theory, but just not plosives. The consonants are naturally short, which can make things feel choppy. 

She has a very wonderful and soft voice that is nice and feminine.
