John wasn't trying to keep up with all of the comments. However, Mary was reading through the responses on social media. 

"John, look!" Mary held up her phone. Then she realized how silly that was and sent John a link. 

It was a thread that started with Gem's singing set to pop music. It began: "There are many theories as to what or why this is happening. However, this snippet of audio gives credence to the idea that these creatures are from a world like our own."

The thread post continued. "This singing is intrinsically linked with and built upon modern Western music theory. Not only is this in a consistent major key and has a rhythm that is easily notated as 4/4, the melody is constructed in a way that heavily implies that it was meant to go along with a standard pop chord progression." John scrolled to the bottom of the thread where it concluded: "I trust academics. All of the samples we have been given have been consistent enough to prove it is one unified language that does not exist on Earth, and those scientists confirm that. I am not speaking against them. I am simply giving my knowledge as a composer. This is the same music we listen to on Earth. This is the music we listen to in America. There is evidence that defies science that these 'strange llamas' are from a place like Earth - influenced by Earth. And the scientists, given how the 'strange llamas' appeared, have no issue co-signing that assertion."

Mary was looking through the comments. After getting to know Gem on a superficial level, she did resent her people being called 'strange llamas' just a little. She knew that Gem was just as smart as any person, even if she couldn't speak. 

Some comments were nasty. They were asserting that Gem's people were just animals. Mary could understand that somewhat given the Pretty Pony Princess hypothesis. But thinking of the same logic being applied to human beings made her feel ill.

John looked up Mary. "Pretty Pony Princess?"

"How else do you explain the music?" Mary shook her head. "I mean, music isn't like when everything eventually evolves into a crab. It's a thing people made up. Bollywood music doesn't use all this Western stuff, so..." Mary trailed off and stared blankly at the wall for a moment. She stood and peeked into the bedroom. Gem was moving around to dance as best she could while sitting in bed. She was singing along as best she could without knowing the words. 

Mary turned around to look at John. "That's Chinese pop music."

"Yeah." John nodded.

"And she really likes it."

"But there's no Chinese cartoon about creatures like Gem." John sighed. 

"Not... In our dimension." Mary was almost scared as she said it.

"I like that theory." John nodded. "But the issue is that we can't just go check. Maybe thinking about her as a cartoon doesn't help."
