One of the things aliens did was force us to hand our phones in before school started. If we expected an emergency, they gave us high schoolers little things that forwarded our calls and texts from certain contacts so that we could speak with our guardians or get important texts from them.

Nothing going on in my life qualified as an emergency, so I had to wait until the end of the day to get my phone to call my mother.

I never actually found out my new friend's name before that moment. As I waited for my phone to boot up, I looked up at her. "On the roll call, you're Jane Doe?"

She looked away from me as she processed what I said. "Why is that?"

"Yeah, it's messed up." Then my phone made a happy little chime. "That's what they call a lady when they don't know her name."

She hadn't turned on her phone. I put in my passcode and my phone started buzzing like crazy as the notifications started to appear.

"I gotta tell my mom your name if I want to invite you over." I pulled up the calls app.

"Oh." She looked back at me. "I... Rosie." She nodded. "My real name is hard to say for humans, but I really like Rosalina. My parents thought Rosalina was too long, so they let me be Rosie."

"Super cool!" I smiled. I had no idea who Rosalina was. I tapped on my mom's contact information and waited for the call to start. 

"What's wrong Mila?" My mom always sounded exasperated when I called. She much preferred texting, but she was also not great at responding to texts. 

"I made a friend. Her name is Rosie. Can I invite her over?" I smiled even though she couldn't see it. 

"Yeah." My mom was shocked. She knew I didn't even have friends in our old neighborhood. "She can come over if her parents aren't going to call the cops or whatever."

I looked over at Rosie. "Are you parents gonna call the cops?"

She looked at me strangely. Then it processed for her. "No, of course not. They're at a conference a few states over. They won't even notice."

I put away that thought for a bit and resumed my conversation with my mom. "They're okay with it! I'll see you when I get home?"

"Yeah." She sighed. "Be careful." She hung up.

It was funny that she told me to be careful. There was no need to be careful in a place like this. Or at least, it wasn't the kind of careful I had to be when I was growing up. 

"I walk home. That okay with you?" I smiled at Rosie.

She let out a soft laugh as I slid my phone into my pocket. "Doesn't everyone walk home? There's no bus."

I giggled. "You're right. You walk home also!"

Rosie nodded. "But thank you for asking. Let's go?"

"Yeah!"
