Forgotten Friday #309 - Alison GDNloids

Mary and John tried to avoid the news about Gem's people. They were being rounded up and experimented on as if they were just animals. 

They definitely kept the news from Gem as they gently tried to help her learn. Also, John was working on getting Gina to be less afraid. It had been two weeks, and Gina was finally ready to see Gem and work with her on learning English. 

Gem was sitting downstairs at the kitchen table when Gina walked in. Gina took a deep breath and sat down across from her. 

Gem gently reached out and placed her paw on Gina's hand. In a soft, sweet voice, she said, "do not fear, friend."

Gina's heart melted as she looked into Gem's kind and sweet eyes. 

Gina was shocked at how easy Gem was to work with and how quickly she picked things up. The hour she had allotted has flown by.

Gem picked up her tablet. John had taught her how to search for Chinese characters by radicals in a dictionary app. The stroke orders she had learnt were just difficult enough that handwriting recognition was too annoying. She found the characters she wanted and turned the screen to Gina. 

Gina let out a small, happy noise when she saw that Gina was trying to tell her that she was nice and did a good job. Gina stood and gave Gem a hug. That was foreign to Gem, but it was still nice getting a hug. Gem wheeled herself out away from the table.

As Gina was leaving, Gem spoke up. "I want to learn more with you." Her speech was accented, but she spoke slowly and carefully so that she was fully understandable.

Gina smiled as she turned towards Gem. "Me too. I'll see you next week, okay?"

"Okay!" Gem smiled brightly. Even though her fangs were exposed, Gina couldn't feel afraid of sweet, kind Gem anymore. 

And it did continue. Every week, Gem and Gina had their time together. Gem was a very fast learner and wasn't afraid to embarrass herself in front of Gina. John and Mary didn't hear Gem speak much unless they were eavesdropping on her English lessons.

That was something about Gem. She did not want anyone to see her struggle or be vulnerable. Speaking English was hard for her. 

She was understanding more and more, though. It was a very good thing that John and Mary never spoke behind Gem's back. Her hearing was extremely sharp.

Everything was nice and sweet while she was learning the fundamentals of English. She did want to leave the house, but she was understanding enough to know that it wasn't safe for her out there. 

She couldn't even stare longingly out of a window thanks to the fear of her being seen and the police kicking in Mary's door. And Gem fully understood that. Mary was more torn up about it than Gem was! 

Something had to be done - but what could they do?
