I was grateful to the aliens, but I had a feeling Rosie wasn't grateful that she was stuck on Earth. It was autumn and the trees were beautiful. I spent my childhood in a city that was mostly parking lots. The aliens were in the process of ripping those up. 

Even though the trees were huge and beautiful, they had just recently been planted. This quaint little town had just been some empty land on the side of an interstate until it was turned into a town for formerly homeless people. 

That's where the apathy really came from. Most small towns had it, but it hit everyone who felt like there was no "good" future to look forward to. I was different. Any apathy I had dissolved the moment I saw the beautiful trees.

Flashback! Mila's Mom's perspective.

They told me that I needed to take a placement test. It would be fast and over with in no time. Instead, I had been trapped in their makeshift office for hours. I took that quick and easy placement test. Then I was poked and prodded. Then they gave me more tests.

Finally, they told me the tests were over. It didn't matter that I missed my shift at the restaurant - I didn't need to go back there at all. 

That was concerning. These weird people show up and tell me to quit my job. I was on the edge of getting up and walking out when a tall woman sat across from me. She smiled at me, but it felt so fake. Like she was wearing a clown mask. 

"Every person is valuable!" Her voice was cheery. "Everyone has different abilities. Just because some people have different abilities doesn't make anyone more valuable than anyone else." The fake smile disappeared for a moment, but came back. "But some abilities make people more useful."

"Great talk." I motioned that I was going to stand. 

She noticed my annoyance and sped up her speech. "While we will ensure that every person is fed, housed, and cared for, we want everyone who is able to contribute to contribute to society."

"Yeah," I sank back down into the chair. "Which I didn't do today."

"No..." The smile disappeared. Her voice lowered and she simply asked: "Why are you here?"

I was confused. 

"You're extremely intelligent, I mean." I could tell she was blushing even though it didn't look exactly the way that humans blushed. "Why aren't you a lawyer or a doctor?"

"I have a fourteen year old daughter." I tried to not sound condescending (though I was). "I am thirty years old."

She didn't understand.

"I'm sorry." I sighed. "I had to drop out of school."

She looked away as she tried to process what I was saying. 

"Did..." I was a bit confused. "Did they not tell you about generational poverty?"

She looked back at me and shook her head. "I'm sorry. Could we start over?"

"Of course." I nodded. 

How Is Mimi-YA's bank?

Mimi-YA has one VCV bank: Galaxy. The bank has three pitches. The high pitch is D4, but D4 starts at like A4 in the prefix map. I changed that so that all three pitches would be in the demonstration. She has a very pretty voice!
