Sometimes I forget that I'm able to read katakana. I'll read it correctly and then say "but I'm bad at katakana so I'm probably wrong." I check and I was right all along.

There were things about Mina that didn't seem cheap until you understood how training worked. She lived thousands of lives and she remembered bits and pieces of them all.
Expensive AIs lived hundreds of thousands of lives and remembered none of them. They were a blank slate to have any specific history slotted into them.
Mina was judging the kitchen she was sitting in with Jessica. Jessica looked just very slightly inhuman. She was perfect... Aside from things like her just slightly too big eyes and her neck that looked like it couldn't support the weight of her head.
"So," Mina cleared her throat. "What was the date of the last time you saw Laura?"
"Date?" Jessica looked confused. "Like... What our parents go on?"
Mina kept her cool as she sent an angry email to the developer without Jessica noticing anything was happening. "I'm sorry - how old are you?"
Jessica stared at her blankly. "Like... Old? I'm not old." She bit her lip. "But I'm not young like a baby or whatever. I'm normal!"
"What year were you born?" Mina forced her appearance to be sweet and understanding.
"What's a year?" Jessica tilted her head sideways.
Mina shook her head. "Silly me. I'm using all of these police terms. Give me a moment!"
She didn't know how Jessica didn't have questions as Mina turned away from her. Mina wasn't built to do dives into server architecture, but she had to figure out what was happening somehow.
Her eye twitched as she searched. Jessica was making a confused and concerned face.
There were no dates. There were global memories that everyone involved had access to... But past a week, those were just all considered "the past".
The girls had been missing for two weeks. Mina shook her head.
"I'm sorry for bothering you, Jessica." Mina stood up. She felt dizzy as her consciousness fully rejoined the visible world.
"Should I bring you to the hospital?" Jessica stood up. "Here, when we get all twitchy like, we go to the hospital."
Mina stopped moving. "What happens at the hospital?"
"Well," Jessica looked so serious. "The doctor takes us to a room. Then we go to sleep. And then we wake up! All better!"
"Wow!" Mina faked enthusiasm. Why did the developer not tell her this?! It wasn't even important, it was just so... Sanitized. The hospital was just for taking the model offline to do fixes. Not to simulate actual sickness.
"Yeah!" Jessica nodded. "Do you want to go?"
Mina shook her head. "I gotta get back to the police station. You let me know if you see Laura, okay?"
Jessica nodded as Mina left the room. Mina snuck away into a hidden spot outside the house and closed her eyes.
When she opened her eyes, she was in her office at the police station. She flopped down onto her chair.
"Who even watches this, developer?" She called out. "This entire place is pointless!"
