Opportunities for foraging seem to be pretty low on agrarian land.
My grandma and my uncle have always been obsessed with foraging for morel mushrooms and then frying them. Those tasted great! What didn't taste so great was the only thing I've had experience foraging: blackberries.
Every year, all of us blackberry bushes just make a ton of blackberries. The only way I've had foraged blackberries that I can tolerate is cobbler. While I can handle blackberries in my frozen mixed berries I get from the store and in smoothies, but I just do not really like blackberries.
The taste isn't great. There is more seed than pulp! And the seeds are aggressive. They're just so hard and want to get stuck between your teeth! I have many irrational fears about my teeth, so this one is the one that really gets my goat.
I do wish I had some cobbler right now, though! The thing about cobbler is that the taste of the fruit is going to usually be masked by the amount of sugar in there. The thing I really want, though, is the way that the dough on top of the cobbler absorbs that fruit juice and sugar mixture.
Though I'm railing against blackberries, the specific memory that I'm thinking about is in fact a blackberry cobbler. I think my family wasn't really one for cobblers but had no idea what else to do for blackberries in specific.
Amazingly, there's a vegan shortcut to doing all of that cobbler stuff. Several varieties of Pillsbury canned biscuits are vegan! And you can used those canned biscuits for cobbler!
Mind you, traditional Southern biscuit dough isn't actually too hard to whip up. Given the fact that Pillsbury biscuits are too obnoxiously perfect and delicious, this may be a case where whipping up the traditional version might actually be better.
If you've never tried blackberries, that's okay. I'm pretty sure the only time or reason we eat them is because we pick them. It's fun to eat things that you have harvested! But I'm really allergic to nature in general. I don't go out there into my driveway and pick them, so I have no emotional connection nor do I want to eat them. I think even my parents are feeling that way at this point! I don't remember any plates of blackberries sitting on the counter this previous year... But then again, I may or may not have a decade sized hole in my memory right now. That would actually explain a lot of stuff.
The fun of blackberries here is that you can pick them from bushes that you didn't plant on your own land. Maybe my grandma had bought some in the past that I had ignored. But from the memories I do have access to, I really don't think it's something that people around me would eat just because they like them. But maybe that's all in my head and everyone loves them!
