Lacy popped her chewing gum as she rang up the items coming through the conveyer belt. She tuned everything out as she went through the motions. No one used money anymore and the state made it illegal to force cashiers to stand. 

"Uh..."

She was pulled out of the fugue state by some old lady. 

She pretended to listen. She didn't actually process a single word. "I'm so sorry, do you need a manager?"

The old lady looked embarrassed. "No, no, it's just that a coupon didn't scan correctly and..."

"Word?" She looked at the screen and typed a bit. "Yeah, policy is that we have rolling expiration dates on those coupons. It scanned correctly, but it's been reduced from a five percent discount to a two percent discount." She turned back to the customer. "If you..."

The woman waved her hand. "No, no, you explained it perfectly!"

Lacy couldn't believe it. She never could believe it. "Thank you! Let's get you all rung up!"

The lady was the last in the line. Lacy pressed all of the buttons she needed to to shut down the register and go on break.

She went outside and sat down in the smoking section. She could never find cigarettes in this brave new world, so she had resorted to vaping.

"How do you do it?" One of her coworkers was sitting beside her. Margarine was high strung. Everyone was. 

Lacy shrugged. "Wanna know the truth? Why I'm out here vaping while no one else out here seems to even think nicotine is a thing?"

Margarine nodded. 

"I was a cashier a long, long time ago." Lacy laughed. "But one day, some testing at some site opened a hole in the space time continuum. And then bam. I'm here in your present and my former future."

Margarine recoiled. "Uh... My mom says..."

"You're thirty." Lacy rolled her eyes. She paused. "Sorry. Things were bad in the past. We weren't even allowed to sit down and you couldn't even buy a Big Mac with an hour of wages."

"That's why you're so mean?" Margarine looked embarrassed. "Because people were mean in the past?"

"Basically, yeah." She laughed. "Remember the TV show Friends?"

Margarine looked extremely confused.

Lacy shook her head. "It's a brave new world. Did you guys read that in high school?"

"No." Margarine's face was blank. "We don't read books in high school because it takes too long."

"You know, in 1984..." She paused. She shook her head. There was no point in making literary references. Especially when she almost mixed up Orwell and Bradbury. "School was harder back in my day. We read whole books in middle school."

"Woah."

It bothered Lacy so much how shocked Margarine was. It was disappointing to see the future. There weren't flying cars and robot butlers. Yeah, living wages and workers rights were great... But it wasn't where a time traveler would want to show up. Maybe if the rift has just thrown her further...
