"Look," he cleared his throat. "By your standards, our entire system of life is..." He tried to find the words. 

"Fascism?" She looked like she was going to be sick.

He couldn't hold back the chuckle. "Ms. Rosewood, perhaps feudalism gets closer to the heart of it."

She didn't pay the most attention in civics class. Besides, she was a Founder Species. They were raised to ignore the inherent problems of their society.

"There's the government." He nodded along. "There's the working class. Then the proletariat."

She shook her head again. "You can't have two distinct working classes."

There was a pause. 

"The proletariat are in a Roman sense, not a Marxist sense."

That broke her. She laughed. "Okay, so it's Watership Down or whatever. Bradbury."

There was another pause. He was concerned. "You weren't exactly a literature major, were you?" He could almost catch the reference she was trying to make. 

She rolled her eyes. "Fighter engineer. I was trained for the military that we never used. I fly good and I know how to rebuild my craft from a pile of scrap."

He nodded. "You know, you could be extremely valuable to us. I'm sure you're aware we don't need your permission, but I would like to ask for it. Could you come visit us on our Ark?"

She laughed when it hit her. "They call it Ark Eng because you're literally on an ark?"

He joined with a quick laugh. "Yes. We like to believe it's because it is archaic English, but we know what they all think."

She felt uncomfortable laughing along with the man on the screen. She had just ended up in the future trying to prevent abuses of power. And this man was heavily implying there were abuses of power. But at the same time...

"Hey..." She looked confused. "How much do you guys abuse your powers? Like..."

He shrugged. "There's no point in denying it. We have created a pretty bad system. But the thing is..." He sighed. "These are our ships. We've eliminated almost every threat - anyone who could replace us. The system is a living organism. No part can live on its own. We try not to be evil. But, come on..." He shook his head. "Sometimes you just need to abuse power to make sure that hundreds of thousands of people can survive for another day."

"Hundreds of thousands?" She tilted her head just slightly. "After the heat death of the universe?"

"Oh, no..." He laughed softly. "Billions. Those hundreds of thousands are just one ship."

"That..." She shook her head. "That feels so unrealistic! A cold world with not a single habitable planet and you've got billions of people?!"

He shrugged. "As long as we can build the ships, we can house more people. There's a lot of empty space to fill up with ships now."

She shook her head. "This is all a joke..." She didn't care about being rude. She stood up and left. What were they going to do?
