Stacy left the conference room. She took a deep breath. 

She was a founder species. The closest she had gotten to a farm was a petting zoo. She hated it then and now she really hated it.

"Ms. Rosewood!" The boy from before ran up to her. "Name is Jocks. I speak Arc Eng."

She nodded. "Okay cool. What now? They're going to send someone to get me?"

Jocks nodded. "Yes, Ms. Rosewood. And that's special. Only two reasons to send someone to another ship." He started to lead her down a hallway. "Genetic diversity and because someone's super special."

She stopped and waited for him to notice. When he turned back towards her, she asked, "do you like, get the whole system?"

His face fell. His lovable foreign accent vanished and he was speaking straight Ark Eng. "It makes you bitter to be told that there is a way out and then it have it taken away. But what can I do? I have a wonderful life here." He rolled his eyes. "It's not on them. They never said I could get out. It was my own people bribing us. If you can shovel manure better than anyone else, maybe they'll let you play sports. If you can cook better then anyone else, maybe they'll let you in their kitchens."

"Oh." She was shocked. 

"The big guys in their ivory tower profusely apologized." He rolled his eyes. That was when Stacy noticed how transparent his eyelids were. "They told me, they never would have allowed that nonsense if they had their way. I was stuck here. I wasn't the aesthetic of the Ark and I was too valuable to be eaten up by the proles."

"That's actually comforting." She covered her mouth. "Your people still lie to your children and there's no punishment?"

He was dumbfounded. "Yeah. They literally only care about safety and output." He stared at her face. She didn't look any different than the people in the Ark despite so much time. "We can do anything we want as long as it doesn't harm the ship and they get their meat."

She lowered her hand. "That doesn't sound evil at all!"

He was so confused he just gave up and laughed. "Yeah. I don't know why you'd think they were evil. Unfair? Yeah, of course. But what can you ask for given all of this? I'm not sure there's much more they could be doing to make the situation better."

"What situation?" She tilted her head to the side. 

There was an awkward pause. He shook his head. "My entire planet was eaten by the Sun. Enough of us to not cause a fatal bottleneck were willing to come be farmers on this ship. They made room for every single person on that planet... But we had to know... People who didn't hop on for 'morals' or 'the feeling of ownership' were eaten by the Sun."

"That's dark." Stacy blinked. "Really dark."
