Previously on A Spectrum of Apple Skins, Apple Bloom learned that she's really pretty, even if she doesn't believe it!
Apple Bloom nervously watched on as Emily furiously swiped on the small black brick she had taken out of the white box. It looked heavy. Apple Bloom knew what phones were, but this one did look different. It was very thick, but it wasn't very long or wide. It fit perfectly in Emily's hands. Emily murmured to herself, "No lock screen, screen reader… voice commands… why can't I just say a blind person is using this…"
The phone chirped in a perfectly human, androgynous voice that somehow still felt motherly, "Thank you for setting me up! I'm Linfrin, and I'm here to help you!"
Apple Bloom's eyes widened as Emily held out the phone for her. She nervously took it as Emily explained, "Due to cell signal being garbage, our company supplies us with Lindroid phones. It has all the power of a standard offline book, put into a phone. Thankfully, calls will go through thanks to our retro 2G network. Anything better gets killed by the skyscrapers. Feds offered to set up relays on the buildings to get at least 7G, but we bargained and got fiber internet for each building instead."
"Wow," Apple Bloom looked down at the phone in her hands. It was heavy as heck.
"I know, you might sprain your wrist using it," Emily sighed. "That's why I keep a Lindroid processing unit in my bag and use the hotspot to power a Lindroid mirror phone. It's slower, but I don't break my wrist every time I want to play video games."
"What's Lindroid?" Apple Bloom knitted her eyebrows.
"I know you would have wanted an Apple," Emily laughed at her own joke, "But Lindroid is good. They're a computer and phone manufacturer that created an OS that is nearly identical on a desktop tower and on your phone for seamless integration. They're the feds' first choice for Lunar and Martian settlers because they can do everything a reasonable person would need without any internet. Even the phones and computers communicate locally, so you can transfer files wirelessly even if there's no internet. Heck, the biggest thing is that they still have ports for cables!"
"Does Lunar have something to do with Luna?" Apple Bloom's eyes widened.
"Yeah," Emily paused. Being a '21st Century Girl' despite being born nearly a thousand years later was really paying off somehow. "Luna was named after the moon's official name. If something has Luna in it, like Lunar, it usually means moon."
"Why would Princess Luna be named after something that happened here?!" Apple Bloom was obviously confused about the fact that her life was completely accurately portrayed in a television show which was supposedly created in the universe she was currently in. She didn't know that her life was seen as just a derivative of a line of plastic horses. However, she did realize that the small twitch in Emily's left eye came from her misunderstanding.
Emily sighed and moved on. "Linfrin works best connected to Wi-Fi, which I set up for you. However, even when you have no connection, Linfrin will still process audio to understand you and do basic things like searching your phone, using a calculator, and navigating with GPS. If you want to use it, just say 'Linfrin, please…'" She paused for long enough for the phone to ignore her command before continuing, "And tell it what you want it to do. So, Linfrin, please add two plus two."
"Two plus two equals four!" The phone helpfully chirped.
Apple Bloom nodded before beginning to ask a question.
"Yeah, yeah… take a seat, Apps. We'll go over everything so that you can use the phone without any help."
We'll actually do a small time skip in the next installment of A Spectrum of Apple Skins! Stay tuned!
