Why didn't the melons get married? At the altar, the bride said "I, cantaloupe..."
So, here's a fun fact. If you're an American, there's a chance you've never had cantaloupe. Instead, that orange melon might have just been muskmelon!
I loved all melons as a kid. Even cucumber! (There's a fun little botany joke for you!)
But cantaloupe in particular made my mouth itch. It was the best melon, but I was mildly allergic. I didn't love it the way I loved malted milk balls or cookies and cream Hershey's bars where I would fight through the pain.
Thankfully, it looks like I've grown out of that allergy! I just ate a small tray of Honeydew and Cantaloupe. (Both are actually muskmelons!) No signs of any kind of distress here. And my body absolutely loves to very loudly announce any signs of distress.
Walmart apparently has the best watermelon now. Growing up in the South, I loved watermelon. There was always delicious watermelon at any summer events. But as I got older, watermelon just got bad. The flavor and texture just got really wrong.
I had a feeling it was just the fact that everything these days is seedless. Seedless watermelons were just starting to get popular in America when I was a baby. They were "new enough" that my kindergarten or first grade teacher was floored when she accidentally bought a seedless melon for some counting exercise. She didn't think she had to check the label!
But these watermelon chunks from Walmart straight up feel like they were vacuum sealed to pump them with juice or something. The texture still feels a little off, but they are super juicy and actually taste like watermelon!
I never really liked stuff that was watermelon flavored growing up. It was always way too strong and didn't really taste like watermelon as far as I can remember.
There weren't many things that were flavored like other melons now that I think about it! America was pretty boring about what flavors we used.
One melon related disappointment was Japanese melon-pan. I lived in Los Angeles and got to explore all of the Japanese stores. I was excited to try melon-pan because it looked so cool!
It was sweet bread. The name referred to how it looked, not how it tasted. The idea of melon flavored bread really made me happy for some reason. I mean, technically I have a ton of melon artificial flavoring for reasons. How silly would it be to get out the stand mixer and make yeasted rolls with melon flavoring?
It would probably be really silly and most of the flavor would probably cook off.
There's a lot of silly things writing these little blocks of text has made me want to cook. I'm not allowed to cook on my own anymore, but if I was allowed to! There would be so many baked goods all over the place! There would be no room for anything else!
