Haley wanted to impress Ted more than anything. He was a famous writer! And that was her dream! 

"So the idea is that the races are switched!" She smiled brightly. Surely he'd be impressed! Coming up with such great ideas in high school! 

"How?" Ted leaned over his desk.

Haley recoiled slightly. "They get switched."

Ted nodded. Haley was impressive - he'd never seen a sixteen year old write as well as she had. But she was sheltered.

"To understand how that would work, you would need to understand how things are the way they are today." Ted did his best to not sound discouraging. "Unless you mean it's something as simple as a racist white family suddenly becomes black."

"Well..." Haley thought for a bit. She recognized that Ted had given her an out. "Well..."

"You know," he leaned back. "That would be hard for me to figure out. If you're set on making it happen on Earth, there's a lot of history you'd need to look into. What could happen that would make Europe fail to thrive while Africa flourishes?"

"The... Black Death?" Haley tried to sound more sure than she was. "If everyone in Europe died..."

"Then there'd be no white people at all." The gears were turning in Ted's head. "Can you imagine, though, how interesting it would be if everyone left along the entire silk road had the chance to fill that vacuum?" He glanced at his computer. "Would there be wars? Would it be peaceful?" He typed a few words on his keyboard and looked back at Haley. "That's actually something I need to look into." He shook his head. "If you don't want to think about all of that, you can write about a fantasy world. Quite a few fantasy settings are unfortunately race coded."

Haley nodded. 

"You always need to think of logistics, but people can suspend their disbelief for fantasy in ways they can't for more realistic fiction." He nodded along. "You could even make it sci-fi with your own alien races. They could be from two different planets so that you don't have to think about the logistics of how they developed in tandem."

"If you were in my shoes, what would you do?" Haley always felt nervous.

"If I were a sixteen year old girl?" He softly laughed. "I would be writing Twilight fanfiction and posting it online. I'd fight everyone who was Team Jacob." He paused. "Do teen girls still like Twilight?"

"No!" Haley laughed. "But..."

"You're young. You're talented. Just keep writing." He smiled. "Not everything needs to be profound. You can just write things that make you happy. As long as you're writing, that's all that matters." He paused. "But maybe avoid anything related to race for now. Until you've got a sensitivity reader, you'll definitely not want to risk writing something that comes off as really, really tasteless by accident."

Haley nodded. "Yeah. I can definitely see why I should wait on that."
