Gosh darn it.
I'm allergic to cantaloupe.
Well, there's degrees to allergies. Plenty of people will just randomly be like "I love how spicy this very bland thing is!" And you can point out that they're having an allergic reaction. Will it really matter? If the extent of your allergy is having a slightly sore throat, what's the big deal? (Note: people will use words that don't make sense when they're talking about stuff that doesn't really make sense. Experiencing a mild allergic reaction isn't spicy like a pepper, but it can make the inside of your mouth and throat hot in a way that it's hard to explain. The weird prickling on your skin is hard to explain. It's a you had to be there thing unless you know what's happening.)
It's tempting to say no big deal. There's more cantaloupe in the fridge and I would like to eat it. I mean, it's in a container of mixed fruit! I'm not having a fibro flare and I'm not having seizures!
So, I gotta be honest. Allergies are really random. Sometimes you can do exposure therapy and get over it. I tried that with allergy shots in middle school. They fixed basically nothing, but now I did go from terrified of needles to getting the depo shot in my arm every eight weeks without flinching.
But I feel like for me, prolonged exposure just makes things worse. I probably wouldn't need to be vegan if I wasn't drinking milk every day for way too long. (Seriously, American school system. No one needs that much milk!)
Every time you eat things you're allergic to, you're risking a reaction. It can be extremely random. I was just living life as normal when I suddenly had to go to the ER because of an allergic reaction. I mean, I ate an entire bowl of ramen with a ramen egg (my roommate told me off for drinking the bone broth when he found out - you're not supposed to actually leave an empty bowl), a milk based latte, and a giant thing of frozen yogurt within 24 hours. That's an extreme amount of dairy, yeah, but I didn't think it was an issue until it was.
I really thought I grew out of my cantaloupe allergy. I thought it was in my head when cucumbers made my throat feel funny. But I can have a normal amount of muskmelon or cucumber and be fine. It's just when I have more than I'm supposed to too often that it becomes an issue.
Not a scary issue, just an issue. I could power through and not care. I probably would be fine. But I kinda feel like I have to admit defeat at some point.
So yeah. If I'm responsible, I can occasionally have a little muskmelon as a treat hidden in something else. But given the choice, I really should not choose to eat things I'm allergic to.
