"Is the Earth flat?" Jimmy poked at his scrambled eggs. 

"Who knows, honey?" His mother smiled softly and patted his hand. "Dave, do you know?"

Dave turned around and looked at his fake son and his fake wife dressed as if it were some Rockwell painting. He shook his head. "Wow, how would you ever find out?"

He was miserable. He was barely holding on. But just one more ridiculous year of this simulation. If he didn't crack, he would get the prize money. If he broke down and told the truth... Simulation ends, no prize money. 

He stared at the appliances. The show had an entirely mismanaged budget. All of the assets were so mismatched. The fridge literally had a texture with a smart screen baked in. How many times had he poked that thing to try and figure out the weather?!

But it was meant to be some vague pre-Space Race kind of time period. At least it functioned on a one season is one month time scale. One year was 112 days, four days could be creamed into 24 hours... He would be at home eating ice cream with his actual mouth in just over a month. 

"Well, time to go to work!" Dave forced himself to laugh as he turned around. "Don't punch anyone I wouldn't punch!" Why did he come up with that as a catchphrase?

"And my dad doesn't punch children!" Jimmy smiled with all of his teeth.

"Haha." Dave forced himself to smile as he hurried out the door.

One of the saving graces was quick travel. He walked directly out of his front door and into his office. 

It was even more frustrating than his house. There were rows and rows of computers running a parody of Windows 95. He sat down at his computer and started playing the work mini game. It was decently fun.

"Hey soldier!"

He rolled his eyes. Work Romance Rosie ended plenty of runs before his. She was a trick the developers put in to trip people up at the end for the drama... And so that they didn't have to give out the grand prize. The affair was always caught and it's hard to back out of that without slipping. 

"Rosie," Dave looked up at her. He had studied. He knew how to get past every road block. "If I weren't married to my wife, I would be married to Jesus."

"Ew." Rosie rolled her eyes. "Gross."

Dave smirked as she stormed away. Crisis averted. He went back to looking at the computer. Him actually playing the mini game didn't actually do anything. They just needed to find something that would look like work to the viewers at home. He knew he had it in the bag.

He knew it. He would win. He would go home with the prize money. Was it enough to justify this?

Probably not. But he was here, he was three months of real world time in, and he was going to see it through.
