"Okay, Gina, I swear, you owe me!" Rick pleaded. "Just one more thing and I'll be gone!"

Gina looked Rick up and down.

Gina was one of those girls that was too cool for everything. She showed up as late as possible then left as early as possible. She didn't talk to anyone unless she had to. But Rick, Mister Perfect Quarterback had to come and invade her Gothic literature book club with all of her quirky forty year old friends. 

No one could stop those women from setting up the perfect Prom King and Queen. So Gina went along with it and had the cutest little high school romance with Rick. But she never even liked him. She didn't like being around him. Their dates were mostly just him staring at nothing while she painted. 

She had aged well. She still felt the same as she did in high school thirty years ago. He had not.

"Won't your wife be mad?" Gina narrowed her eyes.

"About that..." Rick awkwardly laughed. "She left me. Said... She didn't know me in high school. She found me a loser, and I was always going to be a loser. That handsome quarterback was a distant memory that deserved to die."

"Okay!" Gina nodded. "Yeah, I'll go to the dumb prom redo."

"Wait... Really?" Rick's eyes brightened. "You'll do this for me?"

She took a deep breath. "Rick, did you ever like... Like me as a person? I was prettier than all of the cheerleaders. Not being conceited here - just stating that there would be a certain reason you liked me."

Rick paused. She wasn't being conceited. She was the prettiest girl. He took a deep breath. "I'm asexual. I thought I had to follow a certain life path. I have three lovely children by two ex wives and a very... Unfortunate short term relationship but..." He sighed. "With you, I had a girl on my arm. Maybe I lied about what we did..."

Gina laughed. "You lied about us kissing, Rick. You don't need to feel shame about that."

"Right. I looked the part. That made me feel the part." He shook his head. "I liked that I could lie. If you and me..."

"Rick, I'm married." Gina held up her hand. "I'm not asexual. My wife will be totally fine with this dumb prom thing, but I wasn't going to sit around to fan the ego of any man."

"Yeah... I know." He sighed. "Did you like the waffle iron I sent as a wedding present?"

"That was you?!" Gina laughed. "Okay, I'm taking you home to meet Becky. She loves that silly little waffle iron so much. Besides..." She looked concerned. "Becky works a lot with people who have a hard time coming to terms with their sexuality. I know she'd love to point you in the right direction. She knows all of the support groups... It's her superpower."

Rick smiled softly. "I'm excited to meet her."
