Heath was amused as he looked around the examination room. Growing up, he had it drilled into him that the network of planets inhabited by the Founder Species were special. Their homogeny wasn't normal. But the more places he went the less he believed it. This examination room looked like the ones in old movies. Things were different, of course, but everything still felt familiar enough.

He was trying to keep himself calm. Trying to make sure to not give off any kind of hint about how uncomfortable he was. Not much was known about the Aaiuu people. He had heard people gossip about how strange Ouura Luna smelled when she opened her mouth. He thought it was just people being petty. But he realized quickly that stomach acid smells bad and that Aaiuu people had mouths that virtually used stomach acid as saliva.

The door opened and a short woman holding a small child walked in. She was brusque as she sat the child on the exam table. 

Heath looked over at the woman. "You're Aruan's mother?"

She made some strange, whale like sounds. He tried not to shudder. He pulled a device out of his pocket. "You can speak normally. This will translate us both."

She nodded. "She's living off of formula." The translator gave her a bored and slightly annoyed tone. Heath didn't know if that was accurate because he couldn't read her face. "Can't do that forever, now can we?"

Heath shrugged. "Many people have to rely on that. But we can hopefully find a way around that!"

The woman made a dismissive noise. Alright, Heath thought, the translator was right. She did not want to be here and she did not care. 

"So... You're her mother?" Heath tried to be polite. 

"Who else would I be?" She tilted her head back just a bit slowly and then jerked her chin down sharply. "Why am I here? I wanted to simply leave her here, but I'm told there are Union rules? We aren't Union."

"Well, yes..." Heath felt his blood run cold. She was terrifying to him. "But you see, Ouura..."

"Not how you say it." She hissed, spitting out just a few drops of acid. "She's not one of us. We do not claim her. Now, because of her, you're telling me I can't just do what my people have always done?"

"Throw her off a cliff?" Heath's expression was blank. Surely, she would be taken aback by his statement that her people were cruel!

"I wish." She tilted her head back and forth. "It would be a lot less expensive."

Heath took a deep breath and stood. They warned him about this. "Do you sever the covenant of childcare?"

He could see the joy come to her eyes. "Yes!" She was so excited even more acid flew from her mouth. "As you have offered, I hereby sever the covenant of childcare. She is no longer mine."

Heath looked back at Aruan. "Good."
