What's so great about touch screens?
You see the thing and then you touch it and then it does the thing.
That's really it. Instead of moving the mouse cursor, I can just tap on the screen. This is awesome opossum for Praat!
I got my tablet for my blog. But I love using Praat for labeling Diffsinger models because it feels more personal to manually touch and drag each boundary as opposed to using a mouse. That may sound unhinged, but I must admit to being an unhinged person.
There is a drawback. My fingers are not as small and precise as a mouse cursor. Before the USB port started failing, I was able to plug in a drawing tablet for when I needed to be precise. When that stopped working, there was still an on screen touchpad I could use to get the exactly right pixel clicked. This actually wasn't a huge issue. It mostly only came up while trying to do very precise things in UTAU. Given I've done a lot with my old tablet, that kind of comes off as impressive for modern touch screens.
Praat does have an annoying quirk that comes and goes based off the presence of toucans. (Translation: sometimes I'm too out of it to be precise.) You need to set the location of the new boundary and then click exactly on the head of that boundary to set it. Clicking in the wrong place will just select something else.
This is where plugging in a keyboard or using your phone as a keyboard is super cool. You can just hover in the right place and press enter. I set up a custom keyboard layout on my Bluetooth keyboard app! Just enter and _. It's so fast when it works!! But my poor little mini PC just bugs out. Once I pressed enter once and then the computer thought I pressed enter over 800 times. That's... Not great. But using the Bluetooth audio receiver on that thing made the audio sound like it was underwater. It was so bad it was actually sort of funny.
My old tablet didn't have as "fun" of issues. It just tells my phone that Bluetooth isn't working and nothing happens. I was able to do the rough phoneme stage for the data set I was working on before it stopped working though!
So... Given a large enough screen, I don't really see downsides for having a touch screen that you can't easily fix given a working USB port or Bluetooth connection. "You need to plug in a mouse sometimes" isn't that huge of an issue when you remember that a mouse is actually pretty much a requirement of using something that isn't touch screen.
But like... I'm weird. Touch screen Windows computers are pretty rare as far as I know. I'm not sure how useful other people would find having a touchscreen.
But for me it definitely feels like a necessity at this point. It's just more fun.
