"Hello little Aruan!" Sunny giggled as she sat down on the rug across from Aruan. The name Aruan was impossible to pronounce for someone with a mouth that was considered typical in the Union. So Sunny was calling her "are wand" with no 'd' at the end.
Aruan was extremely confused.
"My name is Sunny." Sunny smiled brightly. "I'm a speech pathologist. That's a fancy way of saying that I help you learn how to talk good."
Aruan looked confused.
"You don't speak English?" Sunny looked over at the translator. "Well, Mr. Heath didn't exactly let me know!"
Aruan was taken aback. She could tell how playful Sunny was being. Adults didn't talk like that in her culture. She laughed.
"Yes," Sunny smiled, "we can still work on your speech, even if you're not saying any words."
Aruan wanted to ask what that meant.
Sunny paused and her smile faded. "Do you have any way of communicating with people?"
Aruan stayed silent.
"How about we teach you a way to say yes or no!" Sunny smiled again. "Then it will be easy for us to know what you mean sometimes."
Aruan smiled with her eyes. She couldn't say it, but she was grateful. She had babbled as a baby... But she had been punished for not being able to speak normally. Both the informal yes and no in her mother tongue involved vowels that she was incapable of making. No one tried to understand her. They just ignored her for not saying it correctly.
"It's a good thing that we speak English in the Union, isn't it?" Sunny spoke slowly so that the translator could keep up. "In English, you can say the sounds all wrong! But if you can say the wrong sounds with the right volume and timing, everyone will understand you just fine!"
Aruan tilted her head to the side.
"You know... Mr. Heath told me a lot." Sunny looked from side to side as if she were looking out for any hidden spies. "They knew what you were trying to say the entire time. They were just big mean-butts. The translator though? The translator isn't mean... The poor thing just isn't as smart as a person."
Aruan instantly understood what Sunny meant. Heath and Sunny really were doing their bests. They were trying and they even tried to use the translator on her multiple times. But she did remember her saying something to one of her people. Each time, she would see on their faces that they understood her or at least the gist of what she said. But then they would make it obvious that if she didn't speak perfectly, they would act like she never spoke at all. Unless they wanted to punish her. And they often, often did.
Sunny hummed for a moment. "Maybe we should practice a little English before we practice speech. We have plenty of time! We can do something more fun like watch cartoons for now."
Aruan smiled. She liked cartoons.
How is Chiisai Yume's bank?
Her bank is a one pitch romaji beta bank with no OTO file. Which is definitely fair for a beta! Her name is even different in the bank - Chiisa Jibun. She was a good first attempt at making an Utau!
Where can I download Yume Chiisai?
You can find her on her wiki page.
