Aruan was nervous. Heath was sitting behind his desk and Sunny was sitting beside her. They had been working very hard for quite a long time and they were able to understand her English. (Note: I'm not writing out Aruan's speech impediment but her speech is affected to the point that Heath and Sunny only understand her so well because they know her quirks and can "autocorrect" them in their heads.)

"Your progress has been amazing!" Sunny was smiling but Aruan could tell something was wrong.

"Really amazing!" Heath nodded. "We think that you could have a great career in the Union where you are right now!"

Aruan suddenly understood what they were trying to imply. "This isn't good English."

"Your written English proves that your English is amazing." Sunny sighed. She couldn't help but drop the act. "We have permission to schedule you for surgery."

Aruan leaned back. "Surgery? To make me speak English?"

"Yes." Heath nodded. "There are things that your tongue will always have trouble with without surgery."

Aruan was definitely confused. "Do you not want me to have it?"

It was like someone had pulled the plug out of the drain. The tension left the room and Heath couldn't help but laugh. "I'm sorry! We want you to have it!"

Aruan couldn't help but laugh herself. "Then why this show? Why would you act like you are asking me to do something I didn't want to do?"

"You want this too?" Sunny smiled warmly. 

"Yes!" Aruan nodded. "I really want this. I'll never speak my mother tongue. So why should I leave it unmodified?"

"Goodness." Heath shook his head, "you're so quick with your wordplay. We do need to talk about things like recovery though." His voice weakened, "and possible complications."

Sunny nodded. "This surgery has only been done once. There is risk involved."

"How old do you think I am?" Aruan asked.

Sunny and Heath looked at each other. They didn't know how to answer. It hadn't been that long in terms of actual time, maybe a few years... But Aruan had seemingly grown from a toddler to a preteen in that time.

"I'm old enough to decide I want this." She nodded. "We age differently than you. I'm old enough to say this is what will happen. I consent to the possible consequences."

Sunny pulled Aruan into a side-hug. "You'll be so happy. Even if it doesn't work... You'll be so happy you tried."

Aruan patted the corner of her eye with her sleeve. "Don't make me cry! You've made me emotional like you."

"Maybe..." Heath leaned forward with his elbows on his desk, "we'll be able to give you a new home on a spaceship once this is over."

"I would love that!" Aruan excitedly clasped her hands together. 

"The possibilities feel endless..." Sunny mused. "It's a big universe out there... And you're going to find your place in it."

Heath rubbed his eyes with his wrist. "Now you'll make me cry!"
