"We do not do that, moron!" She shouted at him as soon as they knew there was no one in earshot. "Steriles don't kiss for the same reason animals don't! It's freaking disgusting!"

He shrunk back. "You lied, didn't you?"

"I don't even like you." She rolled her eyes. "But guess what? This is my fault. I knew exactly what was going to happen and I let it happen because I'm bored and I want to watch the world burn."

He stared at her in disbelief. "You're mean." He shook his head. "People here are cruel and unfeeling... But you're just a jerk."

"Uh huh." She nodded. "And now you get to share a bed with me." She laughed as she grabbed his hand and began to lead him to the train station. "Or you can take the couch. I really don't care."

He went quiet as he followed her. He was dissociating as she got their tickets and dragged him into the train. Once they were sitting across from each other, he finally put together a question. "Money?"

She shrugged. "I don't work for money. I work to have something to do. When we get to my place, you'll be shocked at what nice furniture I have." She laughed. "You'll be shocked at the food in my refrigerator. I've been trying to get thrown into prison without hurting someone for years. So, I steal."

"You're a bad person." His face was blank. 

"Anyway, even if I was a magical 'good person', animals don't need to work." She shrugged. "We get food, water, and a place to sleep. Free trips to the emergency room. If the Steriles and the Breeders didn't need cheap labor, no animal would be allowed to work. They would rather just hide us in our slums."

He looked out the window. Then something hit him. "Did you like... Eat your kid or something? You had one and you were always feeding it, but then it went missing."

A look of shock washed over her face. But then she couldn't help but laugh. "Okay, yeah, that happens in nature with real animals, not none of us have ever done that!" She dabbed at the corner of her eyes with her sleeve. "No. I can't speak Aaiuu. They took away the kids. The pretty ones get turned into Steriles and the ugly ones get placed with another Animal caregiver until they're old enough to go to school."

"What about their fathers?" He asked softly. 

She was visibly confused. "What do you even know about animals? You think we kiss? You think our children know their fathers? I thought you'd know how reproduction works at the very least."

"But..." He was still confused. "Don't Breeders get married and have children together?"

She laughed. "Breeders have birth control. They get to choose who to have children with. We don't. And most men are fine never knowing their children."

"I could never do that..." He mumbled. 

She shrugged. "Good thing you're sterile."
