Wiki Wednesday #232 - Shelly Salone
Small happy things! Before I learned the magic of JavaScript, I created a really clunky VCCV to MEL 'converter kit'. Throw all of the files into one folder - deleting those that don't matter if you like - and bam! An oto that you need to completely remake, but with the correct aliases. If anyone made me to understand that they really, really wanted a VCCV to MEL converter, it would be annoying but not difficult to actually write a program that automatically converted a VCCV oto to MEL to be used straight out of the box with the exception of a few things that don't actually exist as their own aliases in VCCV and need to be edited. These things are small enough that they likely wouldn't come up.
The thing is, though, I'm finished with the original MEL because I have progressed to full diphone coverage. VCCV banks have no utility to me because they lack full diphone coverage.
All of this is irrelevant, though. I have access to Shelly's VCCV bank. It's just sitting in my "shared with you" section of Drive, and I may have already converted it to MEL in the past. But, because it is not linked on her webpage, I will pretend it doesn't exist.
Shelly is a twenty-three year old woman created by SockHunter. I think that's it.

Mysterious Pokemon ROM, part one
Note: this is written from the perspective of a fictional character - I do not like horror at all.
My whole childhood, my brother tried to torture me with rom hacks. I say tried because every single time he tried to scare me, it was the best day of my week.
He thought he was really traumatizing me. I pretended to holler and shake, and he found that hilarious. When my parents came home earlier than we expected and heard me, I had to pull them aside and beg them to let me keep lying (even though I was very dedicated to the kindergarten lesson of not lying.) Amazingly, they were fine with my lying and they were fine with my brother's sadistic streak as long as I was.
My brother sadly caught on, but by that point he had no desire to traumatize his middle school aged sister. Thankfully, by that time he had gotten into actual game design and let me play actual games he put together. He still made a special version with random things changed and a few extra jump scares just to show appreciation for me being his best beta tester.
Maybe not sadly, but he knew that he didn't want to live the life of a game developer. Instead, he became an accountant and had a family.
Imagine my surprise when I found a mailer envelope on my porch. It didn't have my address, just my old nickname scribbled on the front with handwriting that belonged in a horror movie. No one in my current life knew me as Mizzy - it was a strange butchering of my middle name that my brother came up with. I felt like I was being filled with helium when I felt the envelope and realized there was a Gameboy cart inside!
I ran back to my room and tore the package open. Yes! It was perfectly cinematically grimy and had "Pokemon BLOO BOO" where the label should have been in the same scratchy script as the package. I did note that Boo alone would have been more thematic, but who was I to judge?
I grabbed my fancy handheld emulator with cartridge support and popped in the cart. I sat down on my bed and held the backlit screen to my face.
The first thing I realized was that despite being in a reproduction Gameboy cartridge, the Gameboy Advanced emulator was starting. I giggled to myself.
My brother never had the stomach for horror imagery - everything he put into his hacks was comical. Things that were unsettling but not gross, he could make with Gameboy graphics. But anything past that blocky, pixel era? He could barely stomach adding blood. I had to wonder why he would go for the ability to have better graphics if he struggled with that. Maybe this wasn't meant to be horror? I couldn't help but frown as that thought passed through my mind.
How is Shelly Salone's bank?
Everyone should have fun with utau. If CV English is fun for you, then you should do it. However, I promise, CZ just did a really weird job of vilifying VC by making the most arcane rules about needing consonant velocity?? With making this tester UST, I was instantly confused on how to make "if". Obviously, it's CV. The phonemes have me confused, though. Why is v as in vase f as in face?!
I edited the prefix map to include all of the pitches in this tester. Shelly has a lovely voice - you don't need VC to have a lovely and smooth voice.
Where can I download Shelly Salone?
You can download her from her official site. She's nice!
