Mysterious Pokemon ROM, part three

With no encounters, I was quickly in Viridian City. Some of the buildings were replaced by graves, and some were turned to rubble. I knew that in the real game, the gym was closed. But I tried anyway. A text box appeared when I got close to it. 'If we survive, leave us to desiccate.'

Huh. What does that mean? I did feel a little bit of giddiness. Something was going through and causing all this chaos. And drying out was part of it? I wished there was some NPC to talk to, but it was just... Nothing. I made my way to the Veridian Forest. Surely there'd be bug trainers there, right?

Wrong. There was nothing. All of the trees were gone. There was tall grass and the changes in elevation, but no trees or trainers. I ran around in the tall grass, swearing there must be wild encounters in the game. Still, no.

I sighed and went into Pewter City. Nothing but gravestones and the gym. I went into the gym and... The screen went black. This time, a half body portrait of a very sickly man holding a Sandshrew appeared on the screen in a dark blue.

'You're like me?'

The man in the game couldn't see me, but I nodded for my mute protagonist.

'How do you do it?' I leaned in. 'I stay here. My friend digs to find us safe worms - not surface ones. It's safe here. Why would you leave me?'

There was silence until a sound file played. Coughing.

'oh.' The text appeared slowly. 'Should I thank you? I was safe, but you were out there. Are you immune? Or is it gone? I'll learn by morning...'

I had so many questions! The screen faded and I was back into the black and white overworld. I turned to go back into the gym, but text appeared. 'I need to wait. We'll know by morning.'

I smiled. So there was some kind of sickness! The options were that I was immune, I hadn't caught it yet, or it was gone. The only one that made sense to me was immunity. I started the game in a graveyard. I took an egg from Oak. Was he immune but just really hungry?

I sighed. If there were no encounters and no trainers, it was going to be a boring walk through Mt. Moon. I checked my party. Generation one didn't have eggs, so I had no way of knowing how close it was to hatching. Well...

I started walking through the route that would eventually lead me to Cerulean City. As I was walking, a Togepi cry from the anime played. I stopped and opened my party... And in Pokemon Blue (sorry, BLOO BOO) was a Togepi. I couldn't help myself. I laughed. Togepi was always my favorite from the anime. I would do awful impressions of its cry constantly. It didn't really do much for the horror aesthetic.
