Almost everyone was frustrated as they stared at the lightbulbs. Plenty of them had gotten the lightbulb to light up, but Mrs. Mossgarten wasn't lying when she said that the hard part was keeping them on. Two kids even blew up the lightbulb and were quickly given another and the instruction to 'not do that again'.

"Okay!" Mrs. Mossgarten clapped her hands together. "Who is ready for the solution?" She smiled as the students grumbled. "Do you notice the switch on the base of the lightbulbs?"

There were groans as a few of the students manually toggled the switches and watched the lightbulbs turn on and off.

"With magic, you need to think about all of the possible solutions!" She smiled brightly. "The first solution seems like it would be to just use magic to give the lightbulb power. And that will work for a bit, but the second your spell stops, it stops!"

"What's the point of magic if it's just doing something we could do with our hands?!" There were murmurs of agreement as one of the boys called out.

Mrs. Mossgarten sighed. "I understand that feeling, but the truth is that you have to do small, boring things before you can learn to do big, interesting things... Besides, how much easier would life be if you could flip light switches from bed?"

She waited until everyone had accepted her reasoning and quieted down before explaining, "What you need to do is gather up your magic, and then pull it to your activator. Then, just focus on the switch. Focus as hard as you can, until it finally switches!"

The room was quiet as the children followed her instructions. Then, there was the soft clicking of switches followed by soft expressions of excitement. For most of them, that was their first successful spell.

"We've run over our class time, but this one is always a doozy. You all must be tired - once you're done, you can go back to your dorms for the night." She continued to vacantly smile as her students stood and left the room.

That just left McKenzie. No matter what she did, she couldn't do it. It wasn't that she couldn't flip the switch - it was that it felt like no magic was coming out.

Mrs. Mossgarten sat down next to her. "I think it's not your fault at all."

McKenzie looked up at her.

"The spell Miss Constance put on you. Please don't tell anyone I said this..." Mrs. Mossgarten looked around. "But that's probably not your actual skin color. The spell she put on you affected your skin, and your skin is how you bring the magic into your body." She paused. "I'll talk to Miss Pendragon tonight, alright? You can go back to your dorm and rest up for tomorrow, alright?"

McKenzie slowly nodded. "Will Aliyah know what to do?"

"You know..." Mrs. Mossgarten patted McKenzie's shoulder. "I really think that there's a good chance she will."
