It's a Living, part five

"Their brains are completely disconnected." Sarah shrugged.

"Wait, what?" I stepped out into the hallway and she followed.

"Yeah. They're hooked up to machines that give all of their vital organs the correct signals. Their brains only process data."

I shook my head. She was acting like she was explaining how to navigate a four way stop while driving.

"Still cheaper than brains in jars." She waved her hand, "it's totally safe. If there's at any point a malfunction or power outage, the brain is automatically reconnected. We've had absolutely zero deaths."

"Absolutely safe?" I didn't believe her.

She looked nervous. "Well, a little brain damage, but that happens with the people downstairs. You remember Margie? She got brain damage from being a processing unit, but she's still happily helping us."

"Okay... How long would my contract be?"

Sarah giggled. "As long as you want." She paused and gave a slow nod. "You know, we've had people like you who could see using the machines downstairs. But this is more intense. People who see nothing can't handle these... You will be asleep. There will be no lights, no flashes. You'll just... Not exist until we wake you up."

I couldn't process what that would mean for me. To be... Gone. If I had ever experienced what the other people downstairs had experienced, it wouldn't have been so scary.

"Mr. Baxter," she placed her hand on my arm. "Downstairs, we rent time to anyone. You've done everything from helping produce independent films to helping run simulations for NASA. But you've also helped people break the law. That doesn't happen up here. Everything we do up here is decided with government grants. You're not applying filters to some girl's videos, you're running simulations that are steps towards curing cancer and improving the lives of our Lunar and Martian colonists." She patted my arm before pulling her hand away. "You have a wonderful brain and you can do these things that few others can. If you stay on long enough, you'll have enough money to be comfortable and never need to work again."

I slowly nodded. "Okay."

It was a blur after that. I was still asking myself if this was the right idea as I was pulled between rooms, signing more and more paperwork in each room.

The word 'predatory' kept pounding in my head as I was stripped down and covered in markings that they would use for the surgeries to make me compatible with the machines.

I realized I didn't know if I was going to wake up. They said I would, but they didn't tell me how long the contract was. They didn't ask me how long I wanted it to be.

I knew they would keep me alive... But would I ever be myself again?

Sarah was smiling brightly as they put the IV into my arm. But I heard one last word from her before it all became black: "sucker."

How are Tatsuya Kenji's banks?

Tatsuya has two banks: a one pitch CV and a one pitch VCV. 

The CV has a nice voice that sounds Young without being shrill.

His power vcv has a much higher pitch and feels a bit nasal to get the powerful voice. It is a nice voice.
