The Jeff VHS, part 1

Universal basic income made everyone a little crazy.

When you don't need to worry about basics like eating food, you can invest your money in creative ways. That is how I got a salaried position debunking 'found media' claiming to be from the naughts through the twenties.

I was a simple YouTuber, writing scripts and recording the audio on my gaming headset while geometric shapes floated under whatever video I was tearing apart. I had a solid fifty consistent viewers, but it was just something I did for fun.

I was shocked when I got the email from Booples. In his typical breathless style, he informed me that the one hundred year anniversary of Jeff the Killer was coming up. I was the best script writer he had ever seen, but I wasn't a good YouTuber. He would pay me to debunk a stack of Jeff the Killer videos.

I had no reason to say no - even for free, I had nothing better to do. So I did it. And I did well, so I started writing scripts debunking all kinds of videos. I went from working on commission to being a salaried employee much faster than I would have thought possible.

A lot of my job was automated - I gave an AI the video and it checked all of the data to prove it was created recently. The data - mostly things like the resolution and graphics technology - instantly debunked it, but then I went through and manually picked out all of the obvious errors to prove it was fake. Things like pointing out the fact that the Burger Bash Birthdays logos are visible in the background of Five Nights at Freddy's and Chuck E. Cheese 'found' videos, despite the company being founded in 2078. (Children really, really want to believe that if Charles Entertainment Cheese was real, Freddy Fazbear was also.)

I was waiting for the AI to finish running when I got a notification. I looked up at the screen and saw Booples on my doorstep holding a box of tapes. I paused.

Booples wasn't the kind of man to leave his house. I rushed to the door and opened it. I felt a weird rush of emotions because it was just so strange to actually stand in front of the man paying me for the first time. 

He looked up at me - he looked so much taller in his videos. His eyes looked empty and his trademark grin was slight and pained.

Wordlessly, I tutted and ushered him inside the way my mother aways did for her shell shocked friends and family members.

He allowed me to corral him to the couch. Once he was sitting on the overstuffed leather monstrosity, he held up the box of tapes.

"So..." Was it bad that I never learned his actual name? He seemed like he had been hiding it from everyone. "Boss man, is this how you are off camera, or is something wrong?"

How Is Eloid's bank?

It's a meme voicebank. 2020 was obviously a weird year, so of course people were trying to find even a little joy. It stinks that the rest of the bank is really good with rolled r samples. Warning: Yelling.
