Charlotte studied McKenzie as she sat in a circle of damp ashes. She was paler than usual and just barely shaking.

"It was some book from the sixties about leaving your husband, wasn't it?" Charlotte sighed. "I'm shocked you'd even touch that, Ms. Azan." She paused. "There's no special ovary magic. A man could do the same exercise if you changed the words to be impactful for him."

"It's not the words, but instead the impact?" Aliyah looked back down at the papers. "Why don't you guys do that?"

"It's terrifying!" McKenzie quickly shook her head, almost as if she was trying to get the voice out of her head. "I was paralyzed, but I heard my own voice, but it wasn't my voice, and it said the words and the things happened!"

"When you open yourself up to the elements in that way," Charlotte crossed her arms, "your magic can feed on your connection to nature and it can kind of get a mind of its own. She had no control... The magic just... Did that."

"I don't want to do magic again." McKenzie looked up at Charlotte. The spell that Miss Constance had put on her was wearing off, but her eyes were still just the right size of unnaturally large to be adorable.

"Do we have to make her?" Charlotte broke her gaze away from McKenzie and looked to Aliyah as if she was the one in power. "Is it really necessary she learns magic?"

"President Penn, this is literally a magic school." Aliyah groaned. "Haven't you..." She paused. "I've been here longer than you. Hasn't Mrs. Mossgarten dealt with other kids she was afraid of?"

"She's been afraid of plenty of kids. I've talked with her about this." Charlotte took a deep breath. "She was afraid of kids who seemed like they'd use magic to harm others."

"Then why is McKenzie suddenly the chosen one that we're all afraid of?" Aliyah quickly glanced at McKenzie, who shrugged. McKenzie wasn't offended.

"Hand me the papers," Charlotte sighed. "I'll show you the difference."

Aliyah slowly stood. "What do you mean by that?"

"Well, I'll get my phone and record you doing the ritual." Charlotte dusted herself off as she stood. "You're one of the most gifted kids anyone has ever seen. You do things that you literally should not be able to do. You know we have cameras that can see the snack machines, right?"

"I- well, but..." Aliyah stammered as she held out the paper.

"You're having fun and learning, Ms. Azan." Charlotte shrugged. "I'm supposed to accept and encourage that or wherever." She took the papers. "So I just want to show you the difference between you and McKenzie. 

Aliyah took a deep breath. "I... For science, President Penn?"

McKenzie stood and grabbed Aliyah's arm. "It's scary, Beezus. You don't need to do it."

"Ken..." Aliyah hugged McKenzie. "You were strong and tried it because I asked you to. You deserve to see me try it too."
