Lotus endured the house tour and the in depth instructions on how to use human bathrooms. She just accepted the fact that Amatrine wanted to share a room with Lotus.

Lotus naturally felt resentment against Ametrine and Ametrine was too self centered to even notice. Lotus did notice that Amatrine seemed to have been taken down quite a few pegs and was subdued given the situation.

"So, Lotus." Ametrine cleared her throat as she pulled herself onto the bed. "I think it's important you learn their language."

"Why?" Lotus sat down on the floor instead of sitting on the bed. Ametrine did not read into that at all.

"Well," Ametrine looked at the wall as she tried to think of a compelling reason. She mused to herself just loudly enough for Lotus to hear, "maybe there's no home to go to. There's nothing that could take us away from here."

Lotus was upset to hear that, but she was more upset by the fact that the literal Empress of their entire world was just fine with giving up and living in a place where she couldn't even walk.

Lotus had two options, and she didn't really like either of them. She could keep the status quo between the two of them and just demure, or she could throw a fit. Throwing a fit had worked in the past. She even knew that there would be virtually no punishment for her throwing a fit as there would have been in their world. 

She shook her head. It took a moment for her to think about what the most neutral option was. She was too tired and frustrated to throw a fit anyway. "I'm not learning their language."

"Lotus, what is the point of being obtuse?" Ametrine lifted her chin slightly. "You want to understand nothing? There's probably no way home."

Lotus could tell the truth. She would rather be miserable if it meant disobeying Ametrine with no punishment. But that would be pointless, wouldn't it? "I'm not smart enough, so I don't want to try. Do I even speak my mother tongue, Empress?"

Ametrine looked away from Lotus. She did have a point. All of the dragon kingdoms had their own language. The erudite were forced to speak Ametrine's language. "Well... There were no Earth dragons in the castle, Lotus. There are English speakers here."

"Your mother bought me a tutor, Ametrine." Lotus didn't hiss. She didn't even sound vindictive. Just tired. "I couldn't. I speak your language, and that is all I ever will speak."

Ametrine was embarrassed. She didn't know that her mother had tried to make Lotus connect with her roots in any way. Ametrine wanted to pretend that her and Lotus were the same. Maybe it was her fault for pushing Lotus to be just like her.

"I'm..." Ametrine shook her head as much as her neck brace would allow. "I'm sorry if my actions made it impossible for you to enjoy life here. It really is a marvelous place. 

"Yeah." Lotus screamed on the inside as she was fully calm on the outside. Her experience had been fully traumatic so far.
