There was a horrific jolt. Fred floated to the porthole and froze. He floated away from the window as Igor came to see what was happening.
With no warning, they were flying away from an Earth with a giant chunk missing from it.
Igor was always calm and collected. He was actually apathetic. He pushed himself away from the wall so that he could access the control panel.
Fred collected himself just enough. "Igor, we will make plans... And then I will go to the sleeping quarters and scream into a pillow."
"All systems are fine." Igor was calm. "This wasn't a foreseen issue. We do not have the fuel required to course correct to get to the Martian or Lunar base."
"Food and water?" Fred's face was blank.
"Water and oxygen supplies are normal. We will be fine. Food..." Igor shook his head. "We cannot get more shipments from Earth, but we grow enough lentils and potatoes to sustain us indefinitely."
"It wasn't a meteor." Igor rolled through their messages. "It wasn't Yellowstone. It was..." He looked back at Fred. "It was war."
"That's not possible!" Fred rubbed his face with his hand. "There's nothing man made that could take out a chunk like that!"
Igor pulled up the video taken from the station of it happening. "See - it's not like an entire chunk was blown off. There's not visible magma. It's just... A big brown area."
"Does that mean...?"
"All electrical systems are shot from the attack. We don't even know what the attack was." Igor sighed. "Maybe I'm wrong and it was some kind of industrial accident."
"But it happened to America?" Fred was despondent.
Earth was racing away from them, but they could still see it in the feed. There was another chunk taken out. Then another.
"That's everybody." Igor suddenly felt sick. "While I know you are mourning the lives of all those on Earth... I am mourning for us."
Fred shook his head. "What's your fear?"
"We're going away from the sun. Our onboard nuclear generator has enough fuel to work until our hypothetical grandchildren are dead." Igor turned away from the control panel. "But we're going towards the asteroid belt. If we escape that, we may get pulled into Jupiter's orbit and watch ourselves get closer and closer until... That's it."
"Could we course correct to orbit Jupiter?" Fred wouldn't call what he felt hope.
"Those rings would destroy us." Igor sighed. "But perhaps that's not what will happen."
"One Sol at a time, Igor?"
"One Sol at a time, friend."
Fred let his emotions start to crack. Things had to be bad for Igor to call him that. He took a deep breath before launching himself to the sleeping quarters to finally sob.
Igor turned to the control panel and started doing the math. Maybe, just maybe, he could find a way for everything to not end horribly.
He wanted to be hopefull... But he was never an optimistic person.
