The Jeff VHS, part 2
Booples looked lost as he looked around the room. I took the box and sat it aside.
"You thought it was wrong of me..." His bombastic voice had been toned down to a soft and thin whisper. "Because I always say, this one wasn't real, but maybe the next one..."
"Not wrong," I tilted my head to the side a bit. "I get it, it's fine to say things like-"
He cut me off. "No, I think I was right."
I tilted my head further as my eyes widened. This wasn't the man that I had known.
"You're a preservationist? Your AI can reconstruct tapes that went bad in 2010?"
I righted my head before slowly nodding. "It's not perfect, but yeah - I can preserve tapes that would disintegrate in a machine."
Booples pointed at the box.
I grabbed a tape from the top of the stack. I looked it over. It wasn't a normal VHS tape - it was a camcorder tape. While I knew there were plenty of ways to get modern data onto a camcorder tape, my first thought was that it had to be legitimate. I grabbed my phone and took a quick picture of it. After a few seconds of searching, my phone let out a happy beep. The app found exact matches for the labeling on the tape, down to the trademark dates. The tapes themselves looked legitimate - not recreations.
I looked back to Booples. "These don't look a hundred years old."
"Set up the capture hardware?" His eyes were wide and sad. "I want to know if this is a prank."
I nodded. "It's going to be a while. Want me to order pizza?"
He shook his head and looked down at his feet. "Can I take a nap?"
I was floored. A virtual stranger appeared at my door and asked to take a nap. But then again, this was the man who signed my paychecks. "Yeah, dude, do you..."
Before I could finish, his shoes were off and he was lying down.
With no further context, I took the tape and brought it to my setup. I slotted the tape into my magnetic reader and sat down. I had a bad habit of muting most notifications, so I hadn't noticed the text that Booples had sent me as soon as I left the room.
It was a link to a video on our company server with the text "run through AI?"
I hummed as I typed the link into my computer and leaned back. I didn't start it, I just set it to download to inspect. The file size was amazingly small compared to what we usually worked with, but the video was also pretty short.
With a few clicks, the AI analysis popped up much faster than usual. Unlike almost every other time, the AI told me that the footage was most likely from the early naughts.

I like CVVC. This list excludes VV, which does makes me sad. The overlap is set very strangely. The voice is extremely sweet and cute, and sounds really good.
