"Ms. Balam," Aliyah brightly smiled as she awkwardly waved. "Thank you so much for meeting with me on such short notice."

The woman on the screen gave a soft chuckle. She was put together with her hair perfectly slicked back into a bun. She was wearing what looked like a suit jacket. "I will always take time out of my day to teach people about my heritage - especially young girls like you!"

"It must be amazing - being a lawyer that protects the rights of your own people." Aliyah's eyes were wide. She realized she didn't want to waste Ms. Balam's time. "I adopted a little sister. She was separated from her family from birth, so we don't actually know where her parents are from other than that they were American citizens."

"Oh," Ms. Balam nodded. "I remember in your message that she had a Latino last name and that her entire skin is a magical absorber as opposed to having pressure points like other people around you."

"Yes," Aliyah nodded along. "She's having difficulty with using her magic, and I wanted to know any way I could help her."

"I am so happy she has a good big sister like you!" Ms. Balam's smile melted Aliyah's heart. "And I can see why you'd be worried that race has something to do with it... But, it's very unlikely that, in her case, race would affect anything."

"Really?" Aliyah's jaw dropped just slightly.

"We do have our own magic, of course!" Ms. Balam softly laughed. "But our magic doesn't rely on biology, but instead an emotional connection to the Earth. Sadly, that magic is tied to a location. You're in Montana?"

"Yes..." Aliyah shrank back. "Do you have both kinds of magic?"

"Luckily, yes." She nodded. "I left my home to go to University, and it was painful. I lost the connection to the Earth that I had been gifted by my elder. Then it was beautiful the moment I stepped back onto our land. There are no elders who can gift that connection anywhere near Montana, so if she is using magic at all, it is just the same magic as all of the students with European heritage."

Aliyah bit the inside of her lip as she tried to process that information.

"I can see why you might feel confused right now..." Ms. Balam radiated kindness. "You have a different magic, but yours isn't tied to any land. Your magic was the first, Ms. Azan. It was taken to places like Oceania where it grew into new magic. But by the time humans migrated to Europe and Asia, magic kind of settled into being homogenous."

"That's why there's Asian international schools..." Aliyah looked away from the screen. She felt oddly sad that McKenzie wasn't special in the same way that she was.

Ms. Balam did plenty of work with children, so she knew how to tactfully redirect. "I may not be an expert, but I can try and help figure this out."
