Mary didn't know what to do, so she sat down on the floor next to the door. She would feel like she was doing something wrong if she went out of earshot. Maybe the creature would suddenly know English and ask for something.

There were many people she could call. There was the news. There were her adult children. But she felt like she knew the best choice. 

She unlocked her phone and opened her contacts. She closed her eyes. If she said it out loud, it would be true. She didn't want that, but there wasn't actually a choice. She tapped on her phone to start the call and put it on speakerphone. She rested the phone on her knee as she looked at the ceiling. 

From the phone, a voice with a thick Southern drawl asked, "Mary Lynn Jefferson, are you okay?"

"Yes, no... Well..." She awkwardly laughed. "Jim, John."

While the man on the other end of the phone was amused at how his name and Jim's name sounded when spoken like that, he put that out of his mind and was serious. "I know you, Mary. If this was a normal emergency, you would be in your car speeding to the hospital."

"It's uh..." Mary shook her head, even though John couldn't see it. 

John was very smart. "Oh wow! I am very sorry and sad that Jim is gone."

"What do you mean?" Mary awkwardly laughed. 

"Well, you see, I'm part of this linguistics forum you know." John sighed. "It's a big mystery. These creatures show up and are speaking absolute nonsense. But for some reason, simplified Chinese text calms them down. Not traditional. Only simplified."

"What kind of luck is that?" Mary laughed because she didn't know what else to do.

"Pretty good luck!" Mary could hear the commotion as John was gathering his things to come over. "It's fascinating. The idea that Chinese script can just be applied to so many languages. We've got some people who are obsessed with endangered languages on the forum. This stuff - it's not a human language. We can't find any threads even linking it to a single family!"

Mary nodded. She didn't know what to say. In the silence, she heard the sobs again. "Hey, I have a feeling you're getting ready to come over. I'm formally asking you to come over and help. Do you think you could communicate with the... The strange lion llama?"

"You know... I'll stop by Gina's office and get some of the stuff she uses for her classes." John stopped making noise for a moment. It hit him. "I'm sorry, Mary. You know how us professors are. We don't know what's going on, but Jim might be okay and come back, right?"

"The best part of believe is the lie." Mary forced herself to reference one of the songs one of her daughters played on loop during her high school years. "There's nothing saying he won't come back, right?"
