Tsurugi is a nineteen year old woman. She is a sorcerer who loves sweet food and has really bad vision. For a Japanese utau, she has a very complete backstory that includes other utaus in a fantasy world.

Tobias and Charlotte patiently waited. It wasn't about McKenzie, it was about dismantling an archaic and evil practice. (Though, Mr. Elf definitely felt protective of the child he spent two years teaching.)

Connie still had no idea Mr. Elf had been teaching McKenzie. In half a century, she had never even seen the elf in any physical form at all.

Finally, on one unseasonably cool August afternoon, Charlotte struck.

She waited until Tobias called her on his burner phone. McKenzie was quietly playing by the pond while Charlotte pushed herself into Connie's house. From the entryway, she marched to Connie's door and forcefully knocked. "Constance!" She was nearly shouting, "it's time for me to take Miss Suarez!"

The door opened to a scowling old woman with a hunched back and gray hair. "Why the fuss, Lottie? Where's my new shipment?"

"That's the thing, Connie..." Charlotte smirked. "Your reign of terror is over. No more. You're never going to neglect another kid for as long as you live."

"Watch your tone!" Connie's voice was simultaneously shrill and gravely. "When you've lived to be three-hundred years old, then you can tell me how to raise children up! Has a single one ended up dead?!"

Charlotte paused. She was so ready to lay into Connie and give her monologue. But then she remembered - Connie still had connections. Charlotte wanted to cackle and yell that their scientists were constantly working to isolate the physical system that underpinned magic. They were working to find a way to give magic to everyone, not just witches.

All of the work was done in secret, away from the old guard. There were some young witches who would never agree to giving away magic, but they did agree that kidnapping babies was bad. She couldn't tell the full truth and not burn everything down in the process. She reeled herself back and lied. "There will be more shipments, but they will not be going to you." She paused. "Your house elf is gone now. He... Passed. Because..." Maybe Connie was too blind to see her struggling. "He was overworked. And he made all of the food. So your children would starve."

"They can die?" Connie had a look of wonderment in her eyes. She shrugged. "I did it for the cheque. How would I get a new house elf?"

"You... Don't."

Connie laughed. "Well, I guess that's it, Lottie. I understand how you young things think old fashioned parenting is neglect. The cheque wasn't even that much with only that one kid. Fem something... I'm sure I'm old enough to find some other welfare to keep up my life of luxury."

Charlotte just stood there, completely in shock. It really was that easy?

She recovered and nodded. She went outside to grab McKenzie so that they could pack all of her things. Maybe, Charlotte dreaded as she considered it, getting McKenzie would be the difficult part.

How Is Kakurine Tsurugi's bank?
