It's a Living, part two

Nurse Linda fed me until I felt like I was going to throw up. It wasn't difficult - for anyone else, it was just a normal snack. That was why she never let me just eat the things everyone else did. I wouldn't get enough carbs.

Once she was sure she couldn't force feed me anything else, she took me back to my station and began to attach the wires coming from my head and arms into the machine once I had sat down.

There were sixteen stations in this hallway. Eight along one wall, eight along the other. The stations were just staggered enough so that when sitting up in the correct position, no one was staring daggers at anyone else directly. No one sat correctly after about ten minutes, though. And even if they did, our eyes are too glazed for anyone to think we actually saw them.

"You're telling me, though," Nurse Linda spoke as she readied the machine, "you can see stuff?"

I nodded as much as I could given the wires. "Every computation is a spark of light until it speeds up enough to blur together."

She sucked her teeth. "Yeah, you know, I'm going to miss you."

I looked back at her. "Am I going to get fired?"

"No, no." She laughed. "They think they're slick, but we all know that there's stuff going on upstairs. And they'd be stupid not to take you."

"Oh." I looked away from her. "Yeah, they refused to say it, but they're going to... Do something with me."

"Yeah." She sighed. "People up there? They go missing for weeks at a time. You know how many missing persons reports we have to answer to?"

"Well..." I looked back at her. "Everyone I care about is right in this building."

She laughed. "I know, I know. I'll be happy you're sleeping in a hospital bed instead of your van."

"Hospital bed?" I turned to the correct position. "I would have an actual bed?"

"You know, I would let you come live with me and my husband." I could hear sadness in her voice. "It's hard not having our kids around anymore... And knowing you're unhomed..."

"No, no." I shook my head. "I don't see it as being unhomed. My van is really, really nice."

"Well, we both know that you'll be homed sooner than later." She moved so that she was in front of me and quickly looked over all of the ports and wires. "Are you ready to go to sleep?"

I nodded. She knew for me that it wasn't sleep. But there were regulations. She always needed to ask if we were ready to sleep before she started up the machine. "I am ready to sleep."

She hummed and whispered, "You're going to be up for all eight hours."

I was going to laugh, but she threw the switch that disconnected my senses and put me into darkness.
