Veronica was beautiful and successful, but she was calming down in her older age. Tobias was shocked to walk in and see her wearing sensible flats as she propped her feet up onto her desk.

"Gigi!" She laughed as she took her legs off of her desk and sat up straight in her chair. "I heard rumors, but I guess it's true. You're out of prison!"

She had changed since the last time he had seen her. He saw the changes in her Christmas cards, but it was entirely different to see her in person. She had went from a smaller, blonder version of the ideal 1950s Hollywood star to a tall, somewhat plain women with brown hair.

"I want to change back," she laughed, "just to see the look on your face, but my suppressor is implanted. Can't risk it falling off and everyone seeing how gorgeous I really am."

"I could have visited at any point..." Tobias awkwardly looked away.

Veronica giggled. "Oh, Gigi." She put on a serious expression. "Now, let me guess, the first time I see you since the fifties, and it's just because a little witch needs something you can't give them."

"Does that make you... Mad?" Tobias winced.

She laughed. "Are you kidding?! It makes me feel amazing that after how hard we competed back then, I'm on top."

"Yeah..." Tobias awkwardly laughed. "I quit my job, and now I'm a school teacher."

"Good for you!" Veronica popped up from her chair before leaning against her desk. "I'm a little concerned you're losing your edge, though. I used the suppressor you made me up until the eighties."

"Well, it's for a witch." He looked down at the floor. "Do you remember that one waitress? Var-something?"

Veronica stood up straight. "Oh, I remember her."

Tobias looked up at Veronica. They awkwardly stared at each other for a moment. When they were starting out in the human world, they worked together. One of their coworkers was a witch who was trying to get away from the magical world at any cost due to what she considered a monster that lived inside of her. She did everything one would expect to do when proper psychiatric care didn't exist.

"I have nightmares about her sometimes, Gigi." Veronica broke her gaze and looked at the floor.

Tobias nodded. "So you get why I'm here, right? She's twelve and already suppressed, but it's not enough. I saw her lose her magic completely for a moment, and she just glowed. I want her to always have that."

Veronica covered her mouth, but she couldn't hold back the laughter. "You're talking like she's your daughter, but..."

"I did raise her," he sighed. "She was the last one, so I had to teach her myself as opposed to relying on the kids to do it. I pretended to be an Elf on the Shelf for the kid."

"Oh." Veronica looked away from him. "I can see why you would be invested."
